Lost the ability to parent...

Hi
Can someone please help. For no obvious reason i find i can no longer drag an object to a body part and parent it. Nor can i do the same thing by using the change parent option. There may be other ways to parent things like swords to hands, but i dont know of them, and i have always been able to simply drag the item to the part, and get on with things.
Now though to item does not stay with the hand, although it is actually parented, and moves with the hand, but is some distance away from it.
Bet the answer is simple....
However not obvious to me
Be grateful for any help, screen shots attached... first knife in girls hand, second same thing once parented showing distance from the hand.

    I see that you have the knife parented to the the pinky and not the hand I am not sure whether this is a problem or not. Do you have the knife selected in your scene before dragging and dropping in the hierarchy?? Edited to add, What version of Daz Studio??

    I think you might have parented it with the option "parent in place" checked. Then the item doesn't jump to the hand, but gets parented in it's current position.

    Thanks for the feedback. Kiwi, i thought the knife was parented to the hand, it appears below the pinky because that also is a part of the hands hierarchy. Also yes that knife was selected before the drag and drop. I also tried the change parent option but the problem was the same. This is version DS pro 4.6.0.18 incidentally.
    On checking after reading Black feathers response, i found the parent in place option to be unchecked. However i tried to parent and again, with that option unchecked, it failed. Then with the parent n place option checked, it worked. Which seem to be the exact opposite of the advice. It seems as long as the parent in place option is checked that it will work, doesnt matter whether you use the change parent option of the drag option. Little bit confused now, but thats normal for me..

    Pleased you got it sorted. I have'nt done anything with DS 4.6 yet as my old XP computer froze while I was just playing around with the UI and just the default Genesis loaded. However am working on specs for a new set-up for building later in the year.
