Currently Mac do not come with nVidia GPUs, so you would be limited to CPU rendering or would have to use an external GPU. However, it appears from what has been said that that may chnage in the next round of Mac Pro machines at least so it might be worth hanging on for a bit.

  • I use a MacBookPro, and it works fine with one big but: no Nvidia card means long renders or outsourcing render to Nimbix cloud, which is actually not a bad economic trade-off if you're not doing animation. I'd say the advantage, though, is strictly in the OS: if the Mac way of doing things works for you, that can be a big or even overwhelming advantage. If that isn't something you'll value significantly over a Windows experience/way of working, for 3D or serious gaming, a PC is more likely to fit your specific needs.

Richard says that using an external GPU could possibly work with a mac...what does this mean exactly?...

Well, I can't give exact details but as i understand it you have an external box with the expansion slots, which connects via Thunderbolt to the Mac - however, even then I seem to recall there are wrinkles to getting it to work and I'm not sure about driver support. Several Mac users have in fact bought basic Windows boxes with a decent nVidia card for rendering.

You might try asking in this thread to get more (and more informed) responses:

As Richard points out, I've heard it's a little finicky and the support for the external box is a more recent update, but it also cranks up the expense a bit.

For what it's worth, I use an iMac to pose and a Windows machine with a high-end nVidia card to render. The workflow on Mac is identical. To make things easier for me, I use Dropbox on both machines to store my DUF files and custom texture files. I added the Dropbox folder to the "DAZ Studio Formats" folder in the Content Library view of both machines. This way, opening scenes is seamless. I of course have to keep both machines up-to-date with the same products I've purchased and DAZ Studio version.

The only sort-of problem I've come across with this workflow is that a scene file has to be saved using "Save As" if it was last saved on the other machine. I just overwrite the file.
