Backward Compatibility Question

Hi everyone. I am new to Daz Studio Pro 4.6. I am picking up how to use fairly quick however I had a compatibility question.
To date, I have purchased content only marked as compatible with Daz Studio Pro 4.6 such the additional Genesis 2 morph bundle and the new Victoria 6. However I am seeing some content which I desire to use but the compatibility is listed as Daz Studio as opposed to Daz Studio Pro 4.6.

Does Daz Studio pro version 4.6 have backward compatibility with content tagged for Daz Studio or does it literally mean what it says only for Daz Studio?

Also another observation, I have made is I see one product with Daz Studio Pro 4.6 compatibility, but the in the description of the product it will list other additional required (or prerequisite) products. When you click on those products to get more information about them you see that their compatibility is Daz Studio only as opposed Daz Studio Pro 4.6. If there is no backward compatibility how does software reconcile the layers of legacy content required in a product which says it compatible with Daz Studio Pro 4.6?

Thank you in advance for your answers and I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    1. Those products listing "Daz Studio" as a requirement will usually work with Daz Studio 4.6 Pro. You can always ask for a refund if it doesn't turn out that way.

    2. Since you have BF2 and V6, then I suggest you buy the V4 shape for V6 for backwards compatibility with V4 clothes/skin textures. Nothing else will work without clever work-a-arounds. Genesis (the first one) can use most clothes by previous figures as well as skin textures and transfer most morphs you want through the GenX plugin.

    3. It would help if you gave us some examples of products that require more than just Daz Studio to work.

DAZ Studio 4.6 will run content that was created for any version, note that i said 'Content'.

I am talking about figures, and clothing designed for those figures, NOT plugins, or scripts, or shaders made for a lower version of DS, they may work, but probably wont in most cases, so please ask about them on the forums before you buy.

All of the Generation 3 content (V3, M3, A3 etc etc) will work without a problem, as will all of Generation 4 (V4, M4, A4, Girl 4 etc etc ), and obvioulsy Genesis (the original one) and Genesis 2.

I hope that helps, but if you are still not sure, just ask.

Hi and thank you for the responses.
To answer the quetsion about which products here is an example with this hot little nymph product:

    http://www.daz3d.com/fairies-elves/barliecorn-for-aiko-4

    Its called Barliecorn
If you look at the compatibility you see Daz Studio 4.6, so yay! I have Daz Studio pro 4.6 so I have confidence that this will be ok to buy.
    ...but wait, Look!
Requires the following products to run Victoria 4.2 morphs++
    So you go there...

    http://www.daz3d.com/fairies-elves/victoria-4-2-morphs

...and you see the compatiblity is Daz Studio. Well that is what has prompted my question for backward compatiblity. Will this Victoria 4.2 morphs++ run with pro 4.6 so I can enjoy the nymph product Barliecorn?
Can DS pro 4.6 reconcile a difference in compatibiltiy requirement?

    Thanks again

That really depends on HOW you wish to use the item. It will work just fine on the A4 figure which is a Morph of the V4 figure and the extra Morphs++ are needed to get the same shape and functionality. But if you wish to use it on Genesis then it will not just work right out of the box.

Pretty much any of the content in the store will work with 4.6. So yes, V4.2 Morphs++ will work in DS 4.6. You will of course have to have Victoria 4.2 for them to work on. and it's listed on the product page for the morphs. They won't work on Genesis without some fiddling. You'll also need the Akio 4 base character as well to use Barliecorn character.

As JimmyC said above when you're looking at plugins, shaders or scripts it might be best to ask before purchasing.

The good news is if you purchase something and find it won't work in your version Daz as a 30 day refund policy.

Whoah yay — there's a slight complication there. The only reason the "compatibility" section says D|S4.6 is because the current up-to-date version of D|S is 4.6. That bit of every store page changes automatically whenever there's a major update.

The best way to check actual compatibility is to open the "What's Included" tab and see if it mentions D|S files. If these are .duf files then that item will only work in D|S4.6 and not work in any earlier version. Other D|S files such as .dsa or .dfa or .ds are for earlier versions but will also work in 4.6 — although some things made for very early D|S versions don't work very well or not at all in 4.6 because the file formats have changed over the years.

Note that this is just content — figures, clothes, scenery, vehicles, etc. As mentioned upthread, plugins intended to work with D|S, including special lights and shaders, sometimes only work in the version they're built for, and sometimes also work in earlier or later versions. The quickest way to find out is to ask here on the forums.

.duf files also work in 4.5 ;-) [and so does G2 although possibly not as well as in 4.6]

I just wanted thank everyone for their responses and sharing their knowledge and experience. I went ahead and purchased the Victoria 4.2 base, morphs++, Aiko 4 and Barliecorn content. It functions well and looks awesome in Daz Studio pro 4.6.

Once you start working with this stuff you begin to realize just how much more you really need... LOL

To clarify things Daz Studios Pro 4.6 Will work remotely with Daz Studio trilogy products. In other words if you buy a item that states the compatibility of Daz Studios and you use Daz Studios Pro 4.6 then the product works for you. The only thing that won't work stated for other systems is immediate plug-ins like lighting or shading... things made for customizing the software's interface( changing the look and appearance of the software itself)

Of course you won't be able to install a function to a software meant for another software(at least not by yourself) but these items are not mostly plug-ins, they're Item files- files that contains nothing but clothes, materials, and textures files. Some may have some lighting presets for when it was made but they most likely won't be transfer over. Hope this helps...
