The EXE and ZIP files are one and the same. One (EXE) is an installer, the other is a simply the same thing zipped up.
DPC is for Poser, DS is for DAZ Studio, and Legacy is for DS4.0.
Using the DIM is a much simpler process, it will only ever show you the files taht you need or want, it will download them only for you, or downlaod and install, the choice is yours. You really should think about using it.
If you are doing a manual install then you need the trx.exe files for DS4.6. you don't need the dpc or the legacy as the trx are about the same size as the dpc
If ou come across any that the trx exe is much smaller than the .dpc exe, then you will need it.
Of course if you are using the DIM to install then you only need the ds file at the top.
dpc and / or ps mean poser and legacy is for ds4 and older.
when there are both exe and zip, then the exe is always for a PC and the zip is for a Mac.
If there is only a zip, then it is a one size fits all zip. These are gradiually replacing the exe files, but the proocess is not complete yet, which is why you are seeing the exe files.
oops, snap again Jimmy :)
Ok thank you both every much yes I am doing a manual install the Dim is giving me fits for some reason...Trish I feel way too stupid for this stuff sometimes but I am saving the answers to all the question I ask.....
Not quite — the ones tagged as .exe are Windows installers, the ones tagged as .zip are zips that contain the Mac installers. The ones that don't have a file extension are the DIM files for DS/DS Legacy/Poser, which are just zips which also contain the DIM manifest files (ignore the manifests if you download the files manually and don't use DIM).
The Product Library page layout has changed a few times (e.g. the DIM files used to have a neat little green logo) over the last few weeks, which doesn't help with the whole confusion thing...
And don't forget the Win/Mac installers are going away, all we'll be left with eventually (it's taking a while to convert everything) are the DIM files.
Correct. The DIM zips work for both PC and Mac
No one addresed the v- it stands for version, so 1.2 is a version before 1.3. That's why you see v1.2 and v1.3 If you want the most up to date, you'd only need v1.3 So if you are seeing duplicate trx's or dpc's or whatever, look and see if one is a v1.2 and the other is a 1.3, and snag the latest version.
To simply all this, if you are a PC user, you go for the exe files if there is an exe and zip file of the same name. You don't need both. If there is only a zip file, that means both MAC and PC users will use it.
someone check this to be sure I'm not steering the OP wrong. *smile*
If you are using DAZ Studio, you would want the first file, not the second one, which is Poser. If you are on a PC, you'd want the .exe file and not the zip. If you want the latest version, get the V1.3's. (I explained whether they were MAC or PC up in version 1.2, not doing it again to clutter the 1.3 part.)
LEGACY is for Daz Studio 4.0 or older. You wouldn't need it unless that is the studio version you are using. So although it looks like a ton of files, if you are just using DS 4.5 or 4.6, you dont need the Legacy, you don't need the Poser, you only need the most recent version.
Correct folks?
I am trying to follow all of this heres what happens when I try to use the install manager it dumps my stuff into daz under the my library and it is not installed anywhere.........yuck so I read the W.I.P. on it ( I have been doing a manual install on everything) I don't understand this thing............
bullit35744, if you decide to use the install manager, you have the ability to choose where to have the installer put the content. I recommend sticking with the default path, shown in your lower red oval. The top red oval shows the location where software applications (not content) would be installed. Wherever you decide to put your content, you'll need to make sure DAZ Studio knows where to find it. Some instructions on doing that are available here.
The warning message you're asking about is there because the developers found that having a single folder hold both DIM-installed and non-DIM installed content can be problematic (it's not entirely clear to me what the potential problem is, though).
If you decide not to use the install manager, I think Novica has it right: assuming you're using DS4.6 (or 4.5) and not also using Poser, you'll only need to download that top file.
Thank you Scott and the link is very helpful.....Trish
