downloading 4.6

I can't seem to d/l the DS4.6 install file without the install manager?!

Surely we are not being forced to use this now? It used to be optional? After all the horror stories, there's no way I am using DIM. If it's now compulsory I'll just have to stay with 4.5 :(

I have blue download buttons and green download and install buttons for DS on my Product Library page.

    sorry, I am an idiot.

I assumed "download and install" meant just that. It doesn't, it means download via DIM.

I need the blue button instead.

by the way, I only have one install file this time (ie no separate Genesis starter essentials). Is that right? In other words is Genesis 2 somehow wrapped up the DS4.6 install exe?

Under the blue and green buttons you should see text that reads, "This product is a bundle that contains the following products..." Click on each icon to access installers for those products (including Genesis Starter Essentials (1) and Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials). They are not included in the main download.

Edit: chohole beat me to it!

    ok, thanks, both.

I think I must be especially stupid today.

I seem to be easily confused (or is it that DAZ just keeps redesigning how everything appears on the website)

genesis starter essentials seems to be a ZIP not an EXE. The top level directory is something called "content"

Looking at what's below it, I assume I unzip it into MyLibrary?

(that's what I did, anyway, but I can't tell if my smart content tab now contains old genesis or new genesis...)

    hmm..

why couldn't they have just made it an EXE so I don't have to figure out where to unzip it...

DAMN! it looks like I unzipped it a level too low. The "content" folder is now under MyLibrary

    grr...

Because more people want it in zip format. They caught a LOT of flack over the years for not offering zips. So to make the customer happy they went with the zips. Plus DIM requires the use of zips so they just zip a pack up once and its available in both places.

ok, thanks. I unzipped it at the right level now.

Only problem is, I deleted the "content" folder that was under My Library (assuming it was only from this ZIP). I am now worried it may have contained other stuff I needed. Is there usually anything in the "content" folder?

You should never have a Content folder inside a My Library folder. Content is the old name for the library folder (DS3), it is now called My Library instead.

It may still be in your recycle bin, have a look there to see if there is anything in it.

Yes. And yes, it is causing a lot of confusion, not all just among newcomers. We can usually figure things out long before DAZ actually tells us what they've done, though, so don't forget to drop in here the next time Something Weird™ happens in the store.

(Notice I said "the next time", not "if"...)

That's what I figured. I have never seen a "content" folder before, so I assumed it could only have appeared from the Genesis 2 installation. So I am hoping I didn't delete anything I had previously. Unfortunately, I shift deleted it, so it's gone.

If a "content" folder is no longer needed, it was a bit daft of DAZ to include it in the Genesis 2 female starter essentials ZIP! (it's the top level directory)

It is a bit confusing, but the DIM uses it, and knows to empty it's contents, and then ignore it.

oh, right. I thought the ZIP was specifically for people who didn't want to use the DIM!

It's more like "equally useable for either situation". The DIM software is set up to process the zips automatically, but because they are zips, us humans can just as easily use our wetware to do exactly the same job.
