New user needing help with rendering.

Hi there, I've just been playing with Daz3D for a few days, and I've run into several problems when rendering.

In the following images, the only thing in the scene was a model, no background.

Problem 1: My model's eyes come out looking black. I've got the lights set to scene only, but it's not shade.  I've got a single spotlight in front of the model, above and to the model's right, shining down on her face.

Problem 2: In the above image, I had the Max Path Length setting set to -1. I try setting it higher, and this happens.  This was with the same setting at +1 (no other settings were changed). The model is rendered as a silhouette only.

Problem 3: The program keeps crashing while I'm rendering. It gets to about 98% and then I get the box saying that Daz3D has stopped working and needs to close.

Can anyone PLEASE help me? Many thanks in advance!

  • 1)  Which rendering engine are you using?  Which model is it?

    2)  Check the textures for the eyes under the Surfaces panel, particularly the sclera, have been loaded correctly.  You may want to try reloading the materials.

    3)  What happens if you put the value back to -1?  I'm not sure why you would change this.  If I was to guess, I'd say this has something to do with the number of light bounces that will be calculated: +1 isn't enough; -1 is probably 'infinite'.  I've always left it at -1.

    4) Have you checked the log file?  If nothing there makes sense, you may want to raise a support ticket and you will likely be asked to provide the log file so you may as well do that up front.

    1. I'm using Iray, using the Victoria model for Genesis 8.

    2. Can you tell me how to do that?  I'm completely new at this program and all I know is how to pose a model and add new lights and then click render.

    3. If I put it back to -1, then it works.  I was under the impression that this setting controlled how many times iot calculates light rays bouncing off things. So a light ray could bounce off a wall and create some fill light? Or do I have that wrong.

    4. I had a look at the log file, and I'm not sure which bits of it are referring to the images I provided, as I've been playing around with it since then.

  • 1.  Default Victoria 8 in Iray preview mode looks like the attached image for me.  I have done nothing more than load V8 from the icon in the Content Library into a new scene.  Even aside from the lighting (I'm using default 'Ruins' HDRI) and hair, yours looks quite different and not only with regard to the eyes.  So I am now wondering how you loaded V8?

    2.  Select the Surfaces tab; expand the Victoria 8 node, then the Surfaces node; click on Sclera.  You should see an image thumbnail in several places, notably for Base Color.  See attached image.  You can reload the materials by - with your V8 selected in the Scene pane - locating the Victoria 8 node under Characters->Genesis 8 Female in Content Library pane, find the Materials->Iray nodes under V8, and double click on the icon for All Maps, or on one of the icons for the eyes.  See attached.

    3.  One light bounce isn't going to be enough, I'd say.  You could try 2, 4, 8 and so on.  But again, why change it from -1?

    4.  When Daz crashes, note any messages on the screen.  Then restart Daz, open the log file and work up from the bottom.  Anything written to the log when the crash happened should be there, nearer the bottom than the top.  The support staff will almost certainly want to have this information if you raise a call with them.

Sorry to refer to Content Library - I don't use Smart Content, but the same principles apply.
