compositing

how do you print seperate shots, one of environment and one of characters, and then match the lighting in adobe? basically what are the export settings, i.e. environment etc, so that the lighting hitting your characters in their rendering without environment, are still lit as though the environment IS still there?
Am i assuming correctly that a normal process is to get your scene, your characters, and your lighting. then take out the characters and render, then add the characters back and take out the environment and render once more? please can you break down the workflow including render/export settings to simply maintain lighting continuity. this process saves render time, doing them separately?
thank you all.

I pose the chracter inside the environment and apply lights. That is either spotlights, a hdri, or both.
Then I hide the environment and render just the character.
Then I hide the character and render just the environment with the same lights.
Then I paste the character render over the environment render in photoshop.
Have a look at the Canvasses feature (Render Settings Advanced tab) which allows you to do several renders at once, and saves the images to .exr which gives you more room for djustment.
thank you both!
