render stuck- how do I get it moving?
I can't find my post from three or four months ago- my render is stuck, stuck, stuck. It goes to 12 minutes and stops every time. Just spins. I have closed, restarted, several times. What do I do to get it out of the darned looping? I've closed the eye and removed everything not needed from the scene, it just won't budge past 12%.

And the settings are the same that I've been using, max ray trace depth 2, pixel samples x,y are 4, shadow samples 16, gain 1.00, gamma correction OFF, shading rate .21, pixel filter width x,y, both 6- are any of these things way out of whack? But they are the same ones I always use.
I went to the two threads (22858 and 16085) again and turned gamma on, since studio doesn't do it. I don't see anything out of the ordinary that would make my renders start sticking- and it's just two figures, with a LOT less in the scene than normal. There IS no scene.
EDIT: And what should gain be? That wasn't addressed. Is 1.00 fine for the higher quality renders? I see my shadow samples is only 16, and that should be 32- but what exactly does that do?
Novica, If DS4.6 is not working as well on your PC as DS4.5 did you can just Install 4.5 again. As far as I know you will only lose the function of a few things needed for G2F and V6 to work fully.
I'm at a loss why 4.5 worked fine and 4.6 will not. It's just a Update and nothing major changed. 4.6 works better for me on the same PC.
Yeah, this is getting really upsetting- but if I'm not mistaken, don't you HAVE to have version 4.6 to use Genesis 2/V6?
I shut off my computer completely and am trying one more time. So there's nothing glaring in my settings that should slow me down (I would assume not since I didnt' change anything and pretty much followed Adam's advice.)
I almost think it wouldn't matter if I went back to 4.5- remember I had this issue one time and you and Szark mentioned something about it getting into a loop? Do you remember what that was?
4.6 has a new Render Engine.

edit: ... I've got G2 on 4.5
From what I've been reading yes G2 and V6 may work better or more fully on 4.6.
IF and this is a BIG IF the TDLMake (it converts the JPG textures to 3Delight format) has a error (Ram fragmented?) it will just stay on the one file sometimes. I've had that happen about 6 times in 4 years I think. More often it's the Render Settings and Trans maps needing HOURS to calculate the Lighting/Shadows/Textures on a hair that SEEMS to kill a render. I've had a simple NONE render take hours just because of the items loaded and the lights used combined with the render settings.
That does not sound like your problem as you were able to do renders like this before you upgraded. If I could give you a clear answer to your issue I would. It could be the New version of 3DeLight in DAZ Studio 4.6 needing more Ram but I do not know.
Yeah, I know you would help if you could. RAM shouldn't be an issue, my hubby installed double the amount of RAM (and I hate to sound dumb but I forgot- if it was 8, it went to 16- it is the max for this laptop which is a really good Samsung.)
I think what is weird is it has done all those renders for the art studio thread these past two days- quite a few- then suddenly BLAM. It did a fountain from Willow Spring with a figure, and fairly quickly, and two renders this morning, then suddenly- loopity loop.
I'm reading that link now- thanks! (Smiley face)

When I do what he says with cntrl alt delete and get in the task manager, the only way I can see ANYTHING other than a close, etc option is to right click and select view process- and there are no tdlmakes. THIS SUCKS.
I am going to reinstall 4.6 again. I'll keep you posted.
IF TDLmake Locks.. It's part of 3Delight (library load) and will not list as a Process You have to close and Reload. Sorry.
I have upon occasion looked and did see something for the TDLmake.exe as a process which could be 'killed' if so desired; however likewise I don't recall ever actually needing to. So if you didn't see it, I would think for sure that wasn't the problem.
What I have found slowing down the renders 'too much imho' are these new fancy skins which are using the new shader settings I think. At any rate, if I remove them and manually apply the textures I want to use [and make my own mats of course] then rendering gets back to what is normal for what I'm doing. [I do not render anything for hours on end] I mention these because they do pause for awhile at some number and then suddenly get going again.
Well, I reinstalled 4.6 and now it leaps to 4% at 30 seconds and sat there (and the 4% was because that was the plain olive background.) It has gone to 8% after 4 minutes so we'll see. I turned Gamma back off as I don't want to add anything new to the equation, if you know what I mean. I'm stuck at 8% for now.
Okay, dumb question. I put the program files (and I think program data, can't remember) in an external hard drive. Are there installers with it or what the heck do I do if I need to reinstall 4.5? If I recall, there are a bunch of files. Would I just move that entire folder (that says Daz3d) back to C directory and move the 4.6 one out? Geez, I am SO not technical. Clicking and letting something install itself is about as tech as I get!
It's stuck on 8%. Crud- now I can't even get to 12%. Great job to reinstall....
Novica, have you tried opening one of your old scenes and rendering that with exactly the same settings you used the first time you rendered it? Maybe there is something in your new scene that is causing the problem. If the old scene renders OK, then maybe 4.6 is fine and it is just something you used in the new scene that is problematic or slow.
I have seen a render hang like this when it wanted more RAM that was available.
Open the task manager and see how much RAM is still available when the render hangs.
Good idea. I'll try that now. I had tried shutting off some lights, etc but didnt see a difference (in current scene.) I'm determined- still piddling. Let me try a different render. Back in a few.
Thanks for the idea too Mark128-
It appears to be the scene. I did the one with Opus Magnum bookcase with V5 and it was already at 20% and still going.
I'll shut somethings off and see what is causing the lag.
Do you have anything with the new Age of Armour SSS shader? According to the documentation PDF for the product, it can sit for awhile calculating as soon as the render hits an area using the shader. I've had it sit for 16 minutes!!!! and then start going again. Maybe you are too impatient.
I've also had it stall for a long time on renders with trans maps, like some hair and leaves. Eventually it starts again, but it can take minutes. Only once or twice it ran for hours sitting at 99% and I finally killed it.
Yeah, I can be impatient- but that's usually after six or seven hours, lol. This was left to render while I went to the barn, spent an hour with my horse, got home, left and went to a dental appointment with my son, came back....you get the gist.
All this is- one V6 and one V5 character with tank tops on, no bottoms, and the bottom half of the bodies out of the scene (all parts removed- eyes closed in Scene tab) There are a couple distant lights, a couple point lights, one spot light. No excuse for a three hour sit and spin at 12% (now 8% after re-install.)
The Opus Magnum set had 135 items, plus V5, plus a LOT more lights. Go figure.
BTW, how do I do that? I have Task Manager open, what am I looking for? CPU? Memory? How do I tell how much is available?
Have your figures got hair on and if so which hair?
Pure Hair Space for Genesis. One is V5, the other is V6. NOTHING else in scene except the two gals w that hair, tank tops.
And only one spotlight, two distant lights. No uber.
I took off the hair and it is at 13% at one minute. That hair must be atrocious.
14% at 3 minutes (it hit the head section and is rendering V6 top of skull, bald)
17% at 4 minutes- moving from left to right and doing V6 forehead
18% at almost 6 minutes-
so it's the hair. GREAT. That's what I'm doing a review of!
Okay, so I'll let you know how this turns out. May be a six day render, lol.
Some hair is just a killer
Do you have Uber surface applied and Occlusion turned off, this really helps.
I thought that might be the case. Your Render times JUMP way up on hairs that have lots of Trans Maps. It will also JUMP the closer the Camera is to the Hair. Just so you know...
Drop your max ray traced depth down to 0 if not using UE2 or reflections or 1 if using AoA SSS shader. 2 is over kill for most images and try what scorpio said above but to be honest without UE2 being used this won't help that much as the occlusion comes from UE2 and not the other lights or shader..
Also bump your Shader Rate up to somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0. You probably don't really need the super high quality that going down to 0.2 gets you for these product reviews you're doing. I believe the default out of the box is 1.0 so that should be good.
opps missed that uber wasn't being used.
Thought you did, no biggie. :- )
