DAZ Studio - Inch / CM measurements?

I'm still fairly new to DAZ, and I was wondering if there's a way to measure the specific length of certain things like height or shoe sizes. I'd like to make characters have different heights that I can make an exact note of.
The only thing I can find is a ruler for Poser, but I don't have Poser, because I was never able to find an exact explanation as to what the difference in the two programs is.

    use it as a background
measure a known t hing (a chair, a door) and you know how tall all things are in Daz or Poser

    worked great for me

    DAZ removed it.. sadly

you could hve used it.. as no measure rod is for sale anywhere

None of the vendors here or at renderosity EVER make a measure rod

They make medical rooms, hospitals, nurses, everything
    but none makes a rod

I did.. but .sadly .. DAZ removed it.

Using a background image will not help, as backgrounds scale to fit the render dimensions and zooming in will cause the same sized item in the scene to take up a different amount of the rendered area.

The item in Poser format will probably work fine in DS -- you'll find it in the Content Library under Poser Formats > [My Library] > Props

Well I found a caveman workaround.
I took a light plane and applied the above measurement image to it as a texture, then increased its scale to 200% and rotated it to stand upright. Now I can just stand a character in front of it or place their feet next to it to work out shoe size with Google as an inch-to-meters conversion guide.

Here is a Free Height board prop in both Daz and Poser measurements. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/23125/
Never saw anything for Shoes, as far as I know once the shoes are fit to the Figure they auto Scale when you scale the figure anyway.

I Guess you could Turn it and use it for shoe's.

It could just be me but whenever I try to install something that isn't done via the manager in DAZ Studio, it never appears in the Smart Content. Then again, I know virtually nothing outside using morphs & posing models.

The simplest way I have found for getting the height of a figure is to ensure they are standing on the ground
Bring in a plane say 0.5M square - it will appear at Y=0 so you can check that the figure is on the floor
Move the plane up until the top of the figures head just disappears below the plane
Read off the height in cms from the Y translate slider scale

You could adapt this method for length and width as well using the X and Z axes, bearing in mind that you would have positive and negative values

No it's not just you, that is why DAZ Studio has two content Tabs. One is Smart Content Tab, this was started when DS4.0 was first released so users could find all the new Genesis items easy. The other is the Content Library Tab, it is so people that have older files can use them. The New (just over a year old now) Smart Content Tab has MetaData files for all the installed content, that metadata file makes it Smart. DAZ3D has been updating all the OLDER content files they sell to include the Metadata so they work in Smart Content. The Content Library Tab is the older way to do things, all items that are not Updated or made by DAZ3D will be found in the Content Library Tab listed in the older DAZ Studio and Poser Format folders. Pretty much that means if you get content (items) not made for/by DAZ3D with MetaData to make it Smart it will only be found in the Older Content Library Tab Formats as long as it is installed properly. I have Many items bought from other 3D Stores that do not have Metadata and I can only use the Content Library Tab to load them in DAZ Studio 4.6. They load and work fine, they just are not Smart. As the user I must learn how they work and when to use them. All of us did before Smart was Added to Studio.

Adding Smart Content metadata is not too hard, maybe I can find some time this weekend to write up a simple how-to. I create metadata for all my freebies (one being the measure wall mentioned above), but I didn't know the metadata was stored in Runtime/Support, so it didn't save with my zips. I will have to do that from now on. Sorry about that.

A very quick how-to for adding metadata to files. In Content Library, whichever folder is open, go to the Options menu (the 3 horizontal lines at the corner of the tab) and choose Content DB Editor. When that opens, select the files you want to add metadata to. It's best to select similar files together, ie. materials, shaders, clothing, etc. Then assign a "Type" using the dropdown box under the list. Materials would be Preset:Material, characters would be Actor, etc.

Then in the bottom pane, you can assign categories and compatibilities. Just select whichever tab you are trying to do, like Categories or Compatibility, then select all the items in the bottom list that are similar and right click. You will get different choices, which I can't explain here, but you might be able to figure them out on your own. I did, it was fairly self explanatory.

That said, I will write up a more detailed step-by-step or record a video. Stay tuned!

sorry.. it did not mean "background" .. but texture.
put it on a "default" poser block as texture and that is your rod
