Organizing Your Content

I figured the New User subforum would be as good as any place to broach this. And, I figure this has been touched on at one time or another, but...

What is the best way to keep track of your 3d assets?

I've only been at this a short while, but I've already amassed a really big collection of assets. To add to the confusion, a lot of this is distributed across a lot of different models (V4, G8, etc.).

Is there a way to keep track of all your options and content, or a best practices guide? As I go further down the rabbit hole it's only going to get worse.

Maybe there is some sort of tagging system, or some mysterious heirarchy of use that I do not yet know. I noticed there is a system in Daz3D to favorite assets with a heart button or somesuch, but that seems to only partly rectify the problem.

What wisdom do the ascended elders of this craft have to impart?

  • I'm a bit sorry to see that this question has been overlooked. Further research has shown me that this is a very common problem, and the answers are varied and more than a little confusing. I guess what I'm saying is I can understand if there is some fatigue associated with this question, and nobody wants to tackle it again. In any case, I was hoping that there was perhaps some new system in the latest Dazz download, or some current and really well thought-out approach to this. Sadly, I can understand that it's not easy to change the hierarchy that these things are arranged into, and that's a serious detriment to any reorganization. As an artist, it would be nice if it was easy to access all of your material and pick and choose as needed. With the Genesis figures, all the past assets are more usable then they have been before because of how flexible the new figures are. I wish there was a good answer to this.

There is... Categories and Tags (keywords); both of which you can customize to your heart's content without actually moving files on disk and breaking various systems that rely on file locations that are deterministic.
