Supersuit and shaders. What am I doing wrong?

Loaded the Genesis Supersuit on my figure, have the suit selected, but when I try to merge a shader nothing happens. Help please.

Make sure you have one or more surfaces selected in the Surfaces tab.

Shaders work only if you have both the object and at least one surface on the object selected.
