Background Images, what is the standard default size

Okay a silly question here!
When I add a background image using the "backdrop settings" button and chose an image it autofits it to the background. Sometimes the image gets rather squished, is there a way to fix this? What is the standard default size? or perhaps an aspect ratio so I can make it look better.
Thank you kindly!

Size doesn't really matter (unless the pic is much smaller than your final render) although a little bit bigger than the render might help. What's important is the aspect ratio: if this matches or is fairly close between the pic and the render size, there should be minimal stretching to fit. Open your Render Settings dialog and see what the numbers are in the Dimensions section, you should see values for the actual render pixel size and the aspect ratio.
