So... it has been a busy week. I'm preparing for my trip home and try to get as much stuff rendered as possible. But there's still going to be a hiatus for Division until May 16th. Ah well. I'm currently working on an hiatus page image of the guys enjoying themselves at the beach.
With a bit of luck, I'll get another page of the 4th Wall online this weekend. The images are all rendered (have been a while, too), but the text is a pain in the rear end. It all sounds so lame.
Dwellers is offcially on hiatus. It's a little bit painful to do this, but then, we're (my co-author and I) are going to use all that experience we gathered during the making of Division to make Dwellers a better comic after its hiatus.
Here's the hiatus image, with Seth and Duon from Dwellers, and 60 years later in Division. In case you wonder that they haven't aged much, that is true. The mages in my story age differently once they are out of puberty, and until they lose their magic when they are old. This will be explained in Division at a later point in the story, but Division-Seth is already 95, and Duon's over 120 years... I'm afraid I'll already be worm fodder at that age.
Tough decision I'm sure, but the hiatus page looks great. The whole group of projects will be better for prioritizing your time. The team will be even more exciting after a good rest!
Yep, good idea. I keep thinking about launching a ssecond title, but every so often I realize "That'd be twice as much work" lol.
Thanks @diomede and @Griffin Avid !
Yes, one of the main problems is that I went into this with a buffer of about 18 pages for Demon Division: Dwellers. Then we (the team) realized that our initial plan - to alternate between present and past) would not really work out. So we split up one project into two. Only, then I suddenly had zero buffer for Division, and the Dweller buffer was quickly dwindling as I couldn't follow up with production of images. It's difficult to get 5-6 images per week rendered for Division as it is. I mean, the rendering itself, that could run over night, but the posing and composition... well, you know how it is.
I hope that I can use the two weeks of the Division-Hiatus I'm back to my own place to create a page buffer of at least two weeks, and be able to complete a few of the sets I'll need (classrooms, students' dorms, The Blue Box, Seth's office, The House, Leon's Den...)
On the bright side of things, I finally got the text together for the new page of "4th Wall". Though I wonder if I should have included the bit about vertices and virtual coordinates, as it's kind of important. But it's tech-talk as it is, and probably not really interesting for most readers?
So... I'm back from vacation, though the comic's still "on vacation" until May 16th. I'm slowly catching up with life and have started with new renders.
A new title page for Demon Division is in progress, and the first couple of images for page 26 are done... more or less. I hope to get a couple of pages completed before the break is over; the buffer is dearly needed.
Here's the "vacation image" of Division; they guys having fun on the beach.
But you approached it in a fun way and it doesn't go on too long. I thought that page was really funny!
We seem to be thinking alike in so many ways.
I did my team at the beach for the 2018 calendar.
Hope you enjoyed your vacation.
I think the 4th Wall page looks very well done. The concepts are clear (as they are going to be), the narrator is fun, and the figure has great action. I'm still not sure. Is the 4th Wall intended as a "making of" documentary or a tutorial. If a tutorial, do you remember the Dr. Geep tutorials for Poser? Might give you some formatting ideas.

Thanks! I'll ty to continue this way, then.... whenever I have the time. Right now, I'm heavily into rendering images for Division. I learned yesterday that certain light emmission sets for emissive lights cause the transparency of hair caps to go whacko, so you have a slightly dark, visible hair cap instead on the usual transparent parts. I thought I was going insane... wasted half a day to track down that error. But, on the bright side of things, the final render of that image came out fine, and I've learned about another possible source of snafu to check.
Hehe... well, that one was mostly "fanservice", and a bit of compensation for all the ugly stuff going on before. It made me feel better showing Simon and his brother Dwyane happy and together after killing off Dwayne and sending Simon into a nervous breakdown.
But a calendar is a good idea, maybe I'll look into that, after I completed the "characters/cast" page...
Thanks, and yes, I enjoyed my vacation, though it was mostly a "work with family" type of thing. You know, preparing for a family festivity.
As for the 4Th Wall, it is a mixture of a "behind the scenes" character fun stuff, and "Infotainment". I try to make it informative, but not as a tutorial, as the target audience is people who are total laymen/women in terms of computer artwork. Like, if I want to explain to my nice what I am doing, I can show her the pages, and she gets an idea. Kind of like having someone sit next to you, and you show him or her the basics of 3D in ten minutes, and try to make them understand that what you are doing is actually hard earned artwork and not just "plug'n play insta-pics".
The Instant Art Button - I love it! I need several please.
Great stuff - am enjoying this thread alot!
Thanks, @ItsCeo !
I'm currently in the process of creating a new title page image for Division, and here's the first attempt. The concept was to have the two lead guys standing and defending themselves in a beam of light with a bit misty air around them (the guy to the left, Seth, is using guns due to his special circumstances), and have the monsters in the back with glowing eyes (yeah, cliche, I know), and some monster in the foreground lunging for them.
I'm not quite sure if this works as planned, though...
You could do this as a 360 render. That would be neato!
I don't think a 360° render would work, unless you go interactive... I might still try at some later point...
Anyway, here's the current version of the title page.
Oh lots of new stuff! nice work on the 4rth wall and I like the new front page design. though I wonder there is that line with the out of focus cobblestone below, that is a bit confusing. On that thought , maybe try using a bit of dof in that image? ( I admit I am a bit addicted to dof..)
And conrgrats, if a bit belated on getting your work into the promo of the vertical story telling!
360 iray works. I've done it before....

Ahhh... sorry for the late reply! I got distracted by things and forgot about this thread the past few days.
I'm currently working on a new page of the 4th Wall, but it will be a bit longer before that is posted. It deals with Pokethrough and assorted issues.
The cobblestone.. actually, that is the same image just blown up, so you se the cobblestone. I couldn't get the render in a format to fit the page size, unfortunately. The render itself has a bit of DOF for the monster in the background. I tried it on the front, too, but it didn't work out, you just got a blurred mess instead of claws. And any more DOF in the background, and you'll lose the sharness of the Godrays.
About the promo... I didn't realize I was in that until you pointed it out... I visited that webinar, but my stuff was more of the "this is why it won't work on a small screen".
Talk about not working... I had no fun getting my character to shed his jacket. This image was supposed to be done from a completely different angle, and he was to place the jacket over his chair. But between messing with dForce, failing miserably (because the §$%§%%§ thing just kept disintegrating, and no map painting was of any use) and getting huge defomations trying to scale and bend... I finally ended up with using cutout opacity to get rid of the front half and hiding the bones of the left arm.
It's unfortunate that 3D clothes aren't made for "normal use".
(The render's very grainy, as I cut it off a few minutes into the render)
Oh, that's definitely looking cool! I'm quite impressed! I might tackle that if I find the time.
Just getting caught up. Hope you had an enjoyable time away!
I like the new cover page, its nice and scary! Can't wait to continue the story. And yes, Dforce is still a bit hit and miss. Hopefully it will continue to improve quickly
New cover looks awesome. Love the lettering too, goes well with the story.
@icedragon and @Worlds_Edge
Thank you! It's great that you like the new cover.
dForce, yes, I got good results with other sets, but that particular one made we mant to scream. Then again, there's one thing that is not wotking so well about dforce, which is that parts of clothing seem to be attracted to another when by gravity laws, they ought to go down straight... But it's still a new thing in Studio, and a huge step forward in that we can use it on nearly everything.
Lettering... I looked quite a while for something that screamed "Division!", and ended up with ChinYen. I bought the commercial version from the creator's website. I'm glad you like it.
I'm just now finding your thread. You have some interesting comic pages. Looking forward to seeing it develop.
Thank you!
I enjoy doing the comic - it forces me to stretch my limits and learn new skills. And I don't have any excuses for not making that render somehow, because the new page has to be out on Wednesday!
I had to reduce my update time to once every twoo weeks, I couldn't keep up with the weekly updates
I'm sorry to hear that! But you're having a lot more images per update than my pages do... I mean, I have 5 to 6 images top per page. You have ten or so per episode.
It's better to cut down the update frequency than compromise on the image quality, is my opinion.
I followed your sig after you answered my post earlier, this is really cool stuff!
I really like the intense feeling that radiates from the stances- they're not giving up any ground, no matter what! Love the background character coming at them from there. Scary stuff!
Thank you, I'm glad you like it. :-)
Thank you!
Yes, they are totally surrounded, and that guy's coming at them from their undefended backside...
Here's the latest page of Demon Division, after the short stint with the students, we're back with Simon.
The top image is the result of some experimenting with the camera pose. I tried to focus the eyes to the handcuffs, and give the image a bit of a "downward" feeling, also in using an unpleasent light for the cells.
That camera angle works, good choice.
I'd like to echoe Novica - love those camera angles!
Looks great.
Love the angles. Serves well in that scene.
Hairy armpits too. lol
I would just widen the space between the words and the balloon-text-holder.
