Texturing help/directions

Is there any place I can get detailed directions/help texturing a prop? I have a untextured prop but have no idea how to texture it. I know I need a editing program like gimp which I already have but thats it.

    if that prop has no UVs, you'll need something to map it in first. I recommend Hexagon, which is inexpensive and is a good modeller as well as uv mapper, and it communicates with daz studio.

    or ya could use a shader on it ,depending on what it is ..
