My custom made skin will not show/load

Hi, I am new to Daz Studio, with only a couple of weeks in.

I have tried to make a custom skin (because I needed it to look purple) for Ivan 7/Genesis 3.

  • I copied the texture files for arms, torso, face, and legs.
  • Hued them in PS.
  • Renamed them exactly as the original files but with a small increment, e.g. Ivan7ArmMapD_01_1004.jpg became Ivan7ArmMapD_03_1004.jpg.
  • I copied the corresponding .duf file, in this case Ivan 7 All Maps Hairless.duf
  • Unzipped the file.
  • Used Notepad++ to swap all texture maps to the hued textures.
  • Set the asset info ID to the new name of the .duf file.
  • Zipped the file again.
  • Renamed it to .duf
  • Removed all temporary/WIP artifacts from the folder.
  • Started DAZ Studio 4.10.

However, my new skin texture will not show.

When I try to double-click the .duf file I get an error message and  the log file tells me the following:

2018-02-10 10:19:36.562 WARNING: libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile

2018-02-10 10:19:36.917 Loading Startup Scene : C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\People\Genesis 3 Male\Materials\Ivan 7\Iray\Ivan 7 All Maps Tiefling.duf

2018-02-10 10:19:36.977 C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/People/Genesis 3 Male/Materials/Ivan 7/Iray/Ivan 7 All Maps Tiefling.duf (1,1): Syntax error - expected '{' or '['

2018-02-10 10:19:36.978 Error reading file, see log for more details.

Any idea what went wrong?

No idea what went wrong but have you tried loading the original mat file, then go to surface pane and for every material zone browse and replace the textures with your modified ones? Then save as a materials preset?

You sure you did not by mistake delete an { or [ somewhere in the Ivan 7 All Maps Tiefling.duf file you modified?

Apart from that, I guess the method Sven Dullah proposed should work.

That actually worked. Thanks. One question though: How do I save the material preset?

Pretty sure. I did not touch anything myself but only used the replace function of Notepad++. I have done this 3 times by now, to make sure I did not insert or delete a { or [. Same results.

    Possible reason:

@ DS General Release 4.10.0.123   Announcement

    File Loading

    • Fixed an issue with resolving image file paths
      • was causing missing '[' or '{' log messages
      • was causing slow down

Suggestion: Simplify your workflow or think of other ways to archive what you want.

    1. with your figure in scene selected you can save a new material preset (uncompressed) to directly edit it with some text editor - makes the zipping/unzipping obsolete, but otherwise good idea have used this text edit on duf material presets myself but with my own files - here I made a similar suggestion: Refreshing textures in DS

    2. why changing the diffuse texture for a simple hue - in the surface pane no matter what shader you are using there should be a Diffuse Property where you load your diffuse texture map, beside that you have the RGB color values for to give it a tint. If you want the skin to be purple just set the middle value that stands for green to zero whats left is the 255 value on red and blue that gives you a purple tint.

Glad it worked:) If you haven't found it yet, just select your character and go to edit/save as/material. The pop up will allow you to select material zones to save with the preset.

Wow!  You went through a heck of a lot.  I never go through that much to change skins.  Just open the material file in photoshop and after I'm done changing it I save it in the base folder but slightly change the name.  Like add purple to the end of the name.  I do not alter anything else.  It can take me many attempts, as in over 20, to get the skin just right.  If I did everything you did I would be exhausted before I finished.  One hard earned recommendation.  Make sure to save your altered file elsewhere, just in case your daz folder ever gets corrupted and you need to reinstall everything.
