Making a primitive into an emmissive.

in New Users
Yes, I know this has been answered at length. But generally the question is how to do it, where the shader is located, etc etc.
I have the correct shader (Shaders > Iray > Emmissives). However, when I apply it (either from the presets pane of the surfaces tab, or from the content library) the primitive does not take on the surface paramaters of an emmissive.... no Luminance, no Color Temperature, etc. It's just a normal primitive.
Any idea what could be tripping me up?

You can use the Surface Selection tool to select both the object and the surface under the mouse in one operation.
On occassion, I've had it not immediate take and I've had to apply the Default Iray Shader first, and then the Emissive shader.
Thank you. Using the surface tool to make sure I had the surface selected did the trick. I appreciate the help!
