    I really like the mint / speckled the best. As long as you are tweeking te colors, what about trying her dress the same minty green as the lettering? Or if you love that bright green, a sublte wash of it following along where the letters change color ?

    For the text, I tried a couple of things on my own, I had a mint that I liked the contrast against the floral designs, but it clashed a bit with the green dress. I also tried a more saturated copper color but that was just ok. Two that I did like were a lilac (somewhere around 26, 56, 0, 0 cmyk), which was a nice contrast, and a slate blue around 69,55,34,11 but was actually quite close to the color in the border once I looked back at it. Maybe you could even try the border color and see if it doesn't look too "flat" by tying it together too much? Look below and tell me what you think.

    Overall I like the composition and the color on this, reminds me of Mucha. And from having gone through your tutorial, I can see similarities in the way the colors are constructed here, which is cool to see how those principles can be applied to other styles. Thanks! This is my first attempt at using the techniques from my tutorial with full color. Before I have only tried one or two tones. I can definitely see how my noir style can adapt to this, but it is a lot more work!

    Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful ideas. I also think it's cool that we both had the same idea of using the border's blue for the lettering. I wound up doing a variation on that and dropped the blue from the "CCN #122" because it did look kind of flat. Here are some more variations to consider.

    Haven't done anything that fit the thread in a while. I was working on this back in January or February originally, but other things distracted me and I kind of lost my train of thought on this. I haven't completely finished this, it is supposed to be a series of panels as an exercise in page layouts, but I haven't had enough motivation. I liked the direction it was going though, so hoping that after sitting with these for a while I will get back into it. Still working on getting a good balance of clean, thin lines on architecture, but it's getting better.

    Well, for good or bad, here is what I've settled on for the final page. Thoughts or suggestions? The yellow fill may or may not make the final cut. I won't know until i actually put the contents text inside.

    I think it works well, and the two tone is a cool effect. I think the color for the background is good on its own, but that depends on whether the content is still easily readable on a colored background.

    I think it works well, and the two tone is a cool effect. I think the color for the background is good on its own, but that depends on whether the content is still easily readable on a colored background.

    You are right to question the background color, but no need to fear here. Almost all black text will print over a color that is set to about 20% saturation and with yellow you can go significantly higher because those two colors offer great contrast with each other  That's why traditional captions in comic books use that color combo. 

    FYI: One of the few exceptions is red text over black background (and vice versa). Whereas that can look okay on screen, it often prints poorly. You really need to have professional-levell skills if you want to mix red/black or black/red. Ditto for any of the really overly saturated colors like vivid green, pink and so forth.

    VERY cool. The character has a nice, old-school look to him. His hair kinda has a metallic look to it, but I'm digging it in this context.

    I'm a total space nut so yeah.  The Earth is a 3Delight only asset I've had for a while, but when I 1st got it, I still didn't know what I was doing in DAZ.  I'm finally in a place where I'm able to utilze it well,  Also, I used some new Topaz Studio filters on this one,  Every time I think I've found every possible Topaz filter to for my workflow, I find something new.

    That is a very good question.  I have no idea.  I feel like I'm not ready yet.

When I did those noir superhero pages a while back (the guy who looked a bit like Batman without the cape)? Even though I only finished about 3 pages of that story, I learned so much from doing it. The experience of having to make my images fit into panels forced me to up my game regarding composition, and it forced me to focus on maintaining a consistent look from panel to panel and page to page. Forcing myself to work in the comic page format forced me to grow in ways I never could have imagined. And I definitely think you're ready to stretch your wings. Even if it's only one or two pages, it will be a chance to grow and explore new areas of your art.

    Well the 1st thing I need to do is an Issue 0.  That will set up the state of humanity and our corner of the Galaxy.  I'm not sure I can do the visuals I have in my head with the assests I have.  Right now, I'm taking a self paced art class, so I can hopefully draw what I can't do with Daz or Poser.

    For example, I want the cover to be the Earth from space, looking pretty jacked up.  A Phoenix is coming up, out and above the Earth out into space.  The issue will be a story of the fall of humanity and it's rebirth from near extinction.  The actual adventures will take place many decades after the rebirth.

    That's why I'm suggesting you do 2-3 pages that have nothing to do with your main story. Maybe make a tiny scene or vignette featuring one of your characters doing something that would introduce him/her and reveal something about their personality.

    Say you've got a thief or law-enforcement type. Your character could be walking down the street and see someone pick a pocket and then your character pick's that thieve's pocket and then slips the money back into the original owner's pocket. Or something funny. Or serious. Picture a scene from a movie (did you see Deadpool? It opens with a scene of him in someone's apartment so that he could intimidate a guy who had bee stalking a woman. The scene is throwaway, but it shows us something about his personality and, even though he's basically a bastard, he tries to do good in his own way.

    Or maybe someone walks down a streeet in the rain and drops a single rose in a puddle in front of a store. Pan back and we see that the store is shot up (bullet holes everywhere) and then we see police tape. Maybe a smeared bloody handprint. The character walks on and we see a close-up of the face. Is that rain, or a tear on the cheek?

    Anything like this would serve as a teaser for your big story, and serve two useful purposes:

    • It would give you experience in crafting a story
    • Your skills would be better when you actually do start. 

    The latter is why I'm working on some small projects before diving into my big one. I want to improve before I tackle the big stuff. So, doing a few small things will make me better before I get to the big stuff. The last thing I want to do is start my next big comic and have the first pages suck because I was still learning my craft. Better to get a little experience first.

    Anyway, this really is the last of me bugging you!

    Sorry for not commenting earlier. I somehow missed your message.

    I tried making the dress tie in more to the mint color, but it just kind of washed out. Weirdly enough, the vivid green is needed to pull our eyes to her so the image is more in balance. I say "weirdly enough" because I wasn't expecting it. I thought her location, size and proximity to the big letters would be sufficient, but I was wrong. Using a lighter green changes the focus of the image. Thanks for the suggestion, though! Even though I didn't use it, it gave me a lot to think about.

    Just an attempt at a anime faux-screen grab. I realize that scanlines on a widscreen display comes off as anachronistic, but it's mainly just for effect. For those wondering about the particulars, its PwToon and some Photoshop post.

    Very, very striking design! Strong colors and good shapes make this the sort of character who can work up close or at a distance. I do think the shading/details on the chest and glove are distracting (although the glove actually looks okay when it is reduced). Maybe tone down the bump maps in those areas? Just a thought.

    Interlace lines are definitely old-fashioned, but they still work as a visual shorthand to let us know this is a monitor or screenshot. Nicely done.

    Something I whipped up quickly as a mailing label. The usual production notes: Poser Pro 2011 Renders, composited in Photoshop and Manga Studio 5 EX (aka Clip Studio Paint).

    And, as you can see, I decided to work in color again!

    WHOOPS! I noticed two things:

    • Shadow: I'm missing the cutouts from the sword.
    • White highlights: It's in the wrong place on the sword arm's leather band, and I should add one to his upper arm, as well.
