Rendering with CPU crashes computer (AMD Ryzen 7)

Whenever I try to render a scene (no matter how complex) it crashes the computer. I haven't been able to see what kind of crash, as the screen just goes black.

Daz's log doesn't give me anything useful.

Computer is (at the moment) not overclocked, as I thought that could have been an issue, and running fully updated drivers on Win10 with 16Gb Ram.

Rendering on the graphics-card (Gainward Nvidia 1070) does not crash the computer rendering the same scene.

Any tips to what this could be, or is it simply that the Ryzen is "too new" so that Daz Studio isn't properly compatible yet?

  • It might be worth trying some other CPU-intensive task and seeing if that also causes a crash, it could be heat related.

  • Download some software that let you keep an eye on the temperatures ( http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php for example), did it run for a while or crash just at the beginning of the render ?

Just to be sure it's not a problem with the renderer (I guess you use IRAY), if so try to make some nasty scene and let 3DL render it and see if it works there, it will use all the CPU cores and should give you CPU a hard time also.

It may well be heat related, consumers computers have cooling and power supply that are designed for peaks of CPU/GPU usage and not sitting at 100% for long time.

  • I'll give that a try. Nothing else crashes the computer like that, but I don't think anything else pushes the cpu like that either.

    Thank you both. :)
