Pinning doesn't seem to work every time

I read through the documentation and it seems that pinning doesn't work for a Michael 8 based figure.  It works OK for a genesis figure (I only triesd it on one and I can't remember which genesis version.)  The docs mention soft pinning but is there a way to implement a "Hard pin" where the bone doesn't move at all?

Maybe by fiddling around with the parameter settings for the bone.  I remember reading somewhere in Studio that there are "hidden parameters".  If these exist (and they probably do) How can I inspect them aand maybe change them?  I also wonder why the Michael 8 series can't be pinned like earlier genesis versions.

There's 2 different sets of pins.

The purple pins with the universal tool and its derivatives (translate, rotate), and the red pins that only work with the active pose tool.

Universal tool pins are fairly straightforward, but clunky and not that rigid, but can be useful in certain situations.

Primarily I use the other tool - active pose, with the red pins. The red pins only work with the active pose so if you switch to another tool the figure will pose as if the red pins do not exist.

When using the active pose tool you should have the tool settings pane available as it is through that the usefulness of the active pose tool is accessed (I have the tool settings pane docked to my layout for one click access). The options in the tool settings pane for the active pose tool that you will primarily be using is the 'toggle pins' (obviously), then the 'pin at origin/end/both' button, and the toggle for the gizmo. Pin at end or origin have the most flexibility, and alllow for more 'organic' manual drag-the-body-part posing, pin at both is much more rigid.

Also, not all figure generations pose the same, G2 I find to be awkward and prone to weird distortions (hip area and collarbone/shoulders for ex can easily be dragged into bizarre distortions), G3 and 8 do not have this issue and are imho far easier to pose realistically. Also, if you have pins placed then go to drag a body part but the pins do not seem to be working just cntrl-z back and do it again, sometimes daz does not seem to see the pins right away, all the time. Annoying but easily worked around.

I see what you mean and I can see the purple pins when I create them with the universal tool.  When I use the active pose tool, I can now create pins that work but I can't see them.  What do I have to do to make them visible?

You mention the tool settings pane.  I looked for that and I can't find it. Is that the pane that is visible on the default window arrangewment?  It seems to be it but I am unsure.  Also you mention pinning the ends of a bone.  Once again, I might have the wrong view.  How do I make that visible?

On your first question not sure why the red pins would not be visible.

For the second, go to windows/panes (top menu bar) to find the tool settings pane, once you have it open dock it to your layout somewhere so you dont have to do that every time you need it (window/workspace/lock-unlock I think). You can also switch from tool to tool within the tool settings pane using the menu at the top of the pane, handy shortcut.

Thank you very much!!!!  I now undestand how to use pins.  Trying to get a pose right without pinning was such a pain.  I would get one limb right and adjusting a different limb would undo the work I did on the first limb.

Yeah the active pose tool and pins are pretty amazing once you get a handle on them, use them and abuse them!

  • Pinning doesn't seem to work for me ANY time. Once I pin a bone at both ends that thing should NOT MOVE! However, drag it is ridiculously easy to move a figure entirely out of place and while there seems to be a little resistance to a pinned bone - it still moves freely. Tried it with G3F, G3M, G8M, G2M, and M4

    What am I doing wrong?

If the bones pinned at both ends move anyway, that's just the way it works, it frustrates me to no end too.
