A lighting Question

I know that it is usually best to have a key/fill light and some rim lights. My question is, do the rim lights need to have shadows on? I am talking in 3dl here. I know that in real life every light casts a shadow, but it irks me when, say, in an outdoor scene, you see competing shadows on the ground. I suppose it is just preference, but I thought I would ask.

Nah, imo that's one of the good things with 3DL and it shortens rendertimes and gives you more freedom to position your lights:) Having more options is always good;)
If the Sun isn't giving you all the light you need, play with the settings before adding artificial lights. Look into the SunLIGHT system from RDNA https://www.daz3d.com/sunlight-ds
