Smoothing modifier makes things less smooth

I have modelled a shirt and when I apply a smothing modifier to it, it starts looking worse than without. But, I need the smoothing modifier to fit the clothing to the figure. What to do?

On the attached pics the first is without smoothing and the second with smoothing.

Have you tried switching from base shape matching to generic? Try adjusting hidden parameters!

Oh, thank you very much, it works. Just like that. But then, what the "base shape matching" is for? I thought I need it to adapt the cloth to the body.
