can someone explain to me the difference in render engines?

Ok, so I THINK we have the 3d and IRAY engines available in DAZ studio.

BUT unless you have a video card that is NVIDIA then you are forced to use 3d.

is that correct?

I am on a 2013 MAC pro, which has a ATI Radeon HD 5870.

Iray does not work for me. 3d seems my only option

is it inferior? is getting the proper video card a good idea?

can we use outside render?

I have two other mac Pro, one brand new and one 2008 Mac pro

can I sdend render project there?

I am confused and can't find anything on this subject.

thanks

PS

does this mean I shouldn't use Iray "items" when building a person?

You can use Iray without a Nvidia card its just slow as its only rendering using CPU.

The Nvidia card needs to have enough VRAM to contain the scene you are rendering.

Its 3delight, its not inferior it's just different, the results are different the lighting and shaders need to be different as well.

when I apply Iray hair I get the following result, which I thought was the render engine problem.

her hair renders white if Iray.

if changed to non Iray it's normal color.

but her lips are Iray and not white.

so I have a whole new issue.

  • Both renders show you using 3Delight. Or do you mean you used 3Delight settings for the hair?

  • if I am set to NVIDIA it tells me there is no render engine. so 3d is my only option (I think)

in the materials section there are Iray and regular materials

if I use Iray hair I get the white render.

    if I use regular hair, I don't

  • The files are settings, one lot for use in Iray one for 3Delight. If you can't use iray you should not use the Iray presets.

  • thanks.
