3x 980ti cards vs 2x 1080ti cards

I am in a situation where my work is taking too long to render, so it's time to boost the render power. Current system is 2x 980ti (so 5,632 cores @ 6GB). The good news is at the moment the scenes are well inside the buffer limit of the 980ti cards (6Gb) - sitting around 4Gb-5Gb.

Adding a 1080ti to the system is a bit on the pricey side (about £700-£900 depending on spec) and as far as I understand will not give me the benefit of the extra ram if fitted with along side the current 980ti cards.

So this is my plan - can I get a sanity check on it. (based on current UK prices)

Put the Two existing 980ti cards in a rack to sit by the side of the existing system.
Add an extra 980ti card (£300 second hand) This will bring me to just within the limit of my 1000w PSU.
This would give me 8,448 cores running at 6Gb (which is something like 1,200 more cores than 2x1080ti) for a little over £400 in actual cost (inc. cables and a new rack) against the Approx £950 for two 1080ti cards (after selling the current two 980ti)

So I expect I would be looking at maybe around a 30% improvement on current render speeds?

Does that sound about right to you?

    Your logic is undeniable! ;)

A corollary question; does anyone know of software (plugin/app/whatever) which can enable DS to use the full memory of a mixed system of video cards with differing memory capacities; so for example a rack of 2x 980ti cards and 2x1080ti cards?

I assume that the software would farm out parts of the rendering tasks to different cards in the rack, according to their speed and memory capacities. Can an Iray renderer do that?

    Not possible

Any card with enough memory to hold the scene will participate. If the scene doesn't fit in 6 GB, the 980ti cards won't be used.

    Operating Sys is Windows 10.

Interesting, I thought that once it hit the max ram of the lowest card Daz automatically switched to CPU rendering?  But awesome if that is not the case, it makes a case for dropping a Titan X cards instead of the 980ti as there is not that much difference in price now and it would give a 12Gb overrun buffer to stop CPU rendering...

    Why not?

Yes, that is the standard situation. I take it that you don't know of any software that will overcome that limitation.

Well... because thats against how any ray renderer works. Same data has to be present in all those graphic cards that work in one frame. At best the result would be inacurate if this wasnt the case.
