Giant Footprints

Hello,

I am using HDRI backgound, Cake & Bob Pines Beach.

I am getting giant footprints in the sand, and changing the Dome Scale Multiplier and Dome Radius does not appear to control this. Is there a way to change the footprints to right size?

Thanks

Try changing the camera focal length and then zoom in out and see if that helps.

  • Hello Fishtales, that moves the footprints around, which could be used to advantage, though it rather messes up the framing.

    Any other ideas?

I don't own the hdri and I am far away from my computer so it is difficult for me to give you any reel pointers.

What focal lengths did you try? It looks as if the original images were taken with a wide angle lens so I would try a zoom lens starting around 55 mm and move up. I would then zoom out and in, not move the camera, to get the framing required. It also looks as if the camera that took the images was close to the ground so I would also try raising the camera and then tilt it down so it is pointing at the ground rather than along it. Also remember the left button moves the camera in and the right one zooms the camera when using the zoom icon on the main viewing pane

  • I tried 120, 240, 300 & 500mm.

I have done a quick render which uses a 240mm rather than the original 65mm, but this setting foreshortens the scene and also makes the beach look unnatural, like its been ironed flat when taking a shot from a fairly low angle. 150mm looks a bit more promising, will be interesting to see how the footprint turns out.

The framing problem relates mostly to what can / cannot be seen in the distance, with the longer lenses reducing a nice landscape to a snippet.

I will see how the quickie 150mm render looks, and if its acceptable then think about reframing.

I'm quite surprised that the Dome scale multiplier and Dome radius make no difference, I shall have to try again to understand these settings.

Finite sphere uses the dome radius, infinite doesn't. Set the Dome Light Resolution to the size of hdri used....16k, 8k, 4k etc and set the dome radius to match.  That sometimes helps but not everytime and can take a while to get settings that suit, sometimes never sad

    Hello again,

I found your advice on this in another thread about blurry HDRI, so I am messing with these settings. One thing, using 16k Dome Radius and 16k Dome Light Res, swapping from Finite to Infinite dome makes no difference to the view, and the footprits are still there on a 65mm shot.

I am now trying a 10k pixel wide shot to improve definition, (I have a 97 megapixel camera?) and w ground. I also changed the texture compression to 16k+ This will take a bit longer to do a test render.

  • None of this made any difference, just had to frame the shot differently to avoud the footprints.

It looks as if Infinate Sphere with Ground is the best render setting, as the footprints are less conspicuus.
