Basic beginner questions on Victoria 4.2

edited April 2013 in New Users

Hello,

Sorry for the very basic questions, I used DAZ a year or 2 ago for a short while, and I'm just trying to get re-familiar with it. I also just installed 4.5 and previously had 4.

My 2 issues getting started are:

1) I have applied some new clothes to Victoria 4.2 but I cannot get rid of the default purple clothes she had on.

2) When I try to apply hair (Amarseda Hair) I see the small window flash that looks like it is loading the hair, but it never appears. I'm not sure why. The description says it is for V4, and the clothes I used went on without a problem.

DAZ 4.5.0.114, Windows 7 (64bit)

I would appreciate some help with these. Thanks!

    Hello Defiantclass, and Welcome!

The purple bikini that you see on V4 is not clothing, it is part of that particular skin texture, and cannot be removed as such without using a paint program. You should have other V4 skins in the Poser Formats 'Pose' folder which you can apply.

    2) When I try to apply hair (Amarseda Hair) I see the small window flash that looks like it is loading the hair, but it never appears. I’m not sure why. The description says it is for V4, and the clothes I used went on without a problem.

It is most likely that you are trying to apply a texture to the hair (which is not loaded yet), and that is why nothing is happening. I can't find my version of Armaseda hair at the moment, but it should be under Figures in Poser Formats, and it should load and fit to V4. If you are trying to apply it using one of the icons in the Pose folder, then it is certainly a MATerail and you will have to find and load the hair first.

See how you get on with that, and I'll see if I can find my Armaseda har in the meantime.

I just found my Amarseda Hair, if I could spell, I would have found it the first time ;)

You will find the actual hair in DAZ Studio Formats > (Your Library) > Hair > AprilYSH, and there should be four .DAZ files for A3, SP3, V3 and V4. Use the V4 one obviously. You should see a sub-folder there called Amarseda Presets, which contains colours and Displacement maps as well. Hope that helps you, if not, post again.

    Thanks for your help.

I found the hair under DAZ Studio Formats > (Your Library) > Hair > AprilYSH, like you said. When I try to apply the V4 version, I do see an orange outline of the hair briefly appear, but then it disappears. I then tried to apply one of the presets, but that didn't show anything either.

Every time bring the mouse across the body, I can see the hair illuminate for a second until the move the mouse further and it disappears again.

I did find and apply a different skin, under Poser Formats>My Library>Pose>MATerials Sample-Res. That gave me a clean skin to start working with.

However, I also noticed that when I try to apply presets from DAZ Studio Formats>People>Victoria 4>Materials>V4 Standard-Res I get errors that says "Could not find file: V4StFace_Candy.jpg (or some other file depending on what I'm trying to apply and where).

    A little additional info....

When I go into Actor, Wardrobe & Props I can see the hair and I can apply a preset to change the color. I can then re-parent the hair to the head. (oddly, all the other clothes turn grey in this mode but the hair is colored)

But when I go back to Pose & Animate, the hair disappears again (and the clothing turn back to their proper colors)

So it looks like the hair is loading, I just can't see it in Pose & Animate for some reason. Why the clothes change colors, I have no idea...

    Thanks again

I don't know what is going on there, but is sounds like it may be a graphics card driver problem, or too low a version of OpenGL (which is used for the Viewport) You can find out by going to Help > Troubleshooting > About Your Video Card. You can also look at the Log File there as well to see if that gibves any clues.

Does the hair render in 3Delight when you try to render the Scene, or is it still missing?

I tried this myself, and it all works OK for me. You may need to reinstall your V4 stuff, and you are aware that it all needs to be installed to the same Runtime folder? You can't put different parts into different places, or DS wont be able to find them.

There is also a file called the PowerLoader, which I find very useful, you should really install that too, although it wont help with your current problems. It allows you to load V4 with the morphs that you want, and the correct skin as well.

Have a look at the bottom of the Log to see what is says, for example mine says (among others)

    Standard-Res/Lips_Spec_Glossy.dsb
    Script executed successfully.

    I don;t use the tabs myself, but it sounds like you need to change the Viewport setting for some of them as shown below;

Ahhh, ok. We're getting somewhere. When I switch to Smooth Shade, I can now see the hair and it is colored. However the clothing is grey.

When I switch to Texture Shade the clothing turns to color and the hair disappears!!

My graphics card is Nvidia Quadro card.

It is really the openGL version that is crucial, it must be later than 1.5, but I'm sure that yours is.

The other thing you can try, is in Edit > Preferences > Interface, and set the Display Optimisation to 'None' There is also a TextureResources Performance slider, you could try using that to see if it makes a difference. The other thing is to make sure that your dirvers for the Video Card are up to date.

Ok, I tried the Preference settings. I'm really not sure about the OpenGL version. I'll have to look into that. But the drivers are pretty up to date. I am 1 version release behind, but I rather doubt that is the issue. That driver release was very recent and I have no issues like this in Maya.

I'm pretty sure this is something stupid that I'm overlooking, considering I'm so new and unfamiliar with DAZ.

However, I can say that regardless of if I am in Smooth Shade or Texture shade, the Render comes out with colored clothing and no hair!

You could check to make sure that the hair is visible to the renderer, by going to the Parameters paneunder Display > Rendering with the hair selected, and make sure that it is set to Visible in Render = 'On'.

I take it that you are using the 3Delight renderer, Render Settings > Quality vs Speed > Best = '4' ?

  • edited December 1969

Yes, thank you. I did see that setting. Visible in Render is set to On. And I do have the render Quality to 4.

On the Render subject (although it's off topic) up until 10 minutes ago, when I clicked the Render button, it would simply open up the render widow and create the render. I could save it to file if I wanted to at that point. But all of a sudden it started opening a File Save window when I click the Render button. I don't want to save an image file every time I render. I don't know why it started doing that all of a sudden. I just want it to render the darn image in the viewer so I can see it...... errr

And I don't know what to make of this whole texture/color/viability problem. It's very frustrating.

Smooth Shaded = black hair, grey clothing
Texture Shaded= no hair, colored clothing

Render = colored clothing, no hair, regardless of what shaded mode I'm in.........

If I thought for a second that there was a hardware issue I would uninstall/reinstall everything. But I have no other reason to believe there is. If there was a hardware/graphics issue, I don't think I would be able to see textures in any view/mode.

Maybe I need to uninstall the hair and the clothing products and reinstall them. Maybe they are no installed correctly. Although I don't know if I would install them "correctly" the second time, seeing how I wasn't aware if I installed them incorrectly the first time. I'm just too confused by the Poser/DAZ difference with different install paths, etc.... I wish it was a little more straight forward.

You could try another Layout using Window > Workspace > Select Layout. You may be using Hollywood Boulevard, you could try using one of the other ones, like City Limits to see if that works any better. I just reset mine to Hollywood, and it worked OK with V4 and the Amarseda hair.

    See if that helps any.

  • edited December 1969

Yeah, I'm afraid that didn't change any functionality. I still have the same issues.

There must be a setting somewhere that I accidentally ticked to send renders to file rather than just opening the render viewer. It was working just fine in Hollywood Blvd. Then all of a sudden it started trying to save to file. I don't know....

And as far as the texturing issues go, I don't understand the install path topic. I did read through it before initially installing, but I may have missed something. As far as I know, I have only 1 install path for everything. And that is C:\Users\profile\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library.

Within that directory there is Data, Hair, People, ReadMe's, Runtime, Scenes, Scripts, Uninstallers

During the installs of the Amarseda Hair and the Sentry clothing, I directed the installer to the "My Library" folder and allowed it put the files where they belonged within that directory by itself. It looked right to me.

Ah ha! I fixed the render part. It was a setting. Render to....... Still Image (new window)

  • edited December 1969

I went ahead and unistalled the hair and reinstalled it. I suspected the issue was with the hair because the colthing is grey in smooth shade, and colored in textured shade. That makes sense to me. The hair on the other hand disappears in texture shaded mode, and that does not make sense to me.

However it still disappears after the reinstall. I don't know... maybe I'll look for another hair to install as a test.....

    1) I have applied some new clothes to Victoria 4.2 but I cannot get rid of the default purple clothes she had on.

This question may have been answered already, but I had same problem. After starting V4, go to Daz V4 > Materials > Standard Res > all natural,.
