I lke to think the people voting will choose the images they like best, rather than voting for an image because of who the artist is. Many of us have a distinctive style that is recognizable, even without a copyright watermark on the image, so "anonymously" would be difficult. Knittingmommy did the best possible by taking down the entry thread during the voting, and listing the images in order of entry without including the artists' names.

I really hope we end up with a lot of forum members voting, over and above the artists who entered. The more the merrier, and it will help with "brand recognition" when the 4th Annual competition rolls around.

  • This was my first run at putting to the contest to a public vote and it honestly never occurred to me put that in the voting rules. We'll see what happens when the votes are tallied. If needed, I'll consider putting that in the rules next year if we do open voting again. At least now, I know how to set everything up. It was not as easy as I thought it would be to figure out how to set the survey up. I still had to ask @Totte a few questions because he's had so much experience with these things and I ran into a few issues I couldn't figure out. He saved my bacon and got me through that little hitch.  :)

I'm another one who didn't feel right about voting for my own images. A) because it didn't feel the right ting to do and B) I know I like my own images but does anyone else? It might be the only vote it gets :)

It would be nice next year the survey automatically excluded a voter if they have an entry in a section of the contest. I'm not sure if SurveyMonkey can do that though.

  • Oh, I have no idea if SurveyMonkey can do that or not but I'm not sure I completely agree with excluding voters based on the fact they entered the contest. We will have to see how this year's voting goes. So far, we've had a pretty good turn out for voting and it's still early yet. A lot of what we do next year will be determined by how things go this year.

I agree. I've seen other competitions where people who enter are still allowed to vote, but they do include in the rules that participants aren't allowed to vote for their own entry. It keeps things very fair and I think it's a good rule of thumb :). But you are doing, awesome, @Knittingmommy. The best way to learn is by doing :).

This would work if we have a significant number of voters over and above the number of people entering. If not, there might not be enough votes.  Btw I didn’t vote for myself either.  That would somehow feel “unsportsmanlike-like” or the art equivalent.  Lol

Also in contests where there are lots of entries, I’ve seen some rules allowing each voter to vote for say ten picks. This is good if you find the winning pics only get 3 or 5 votes.   Less votes cast might mean the diff between winning pics and all others is just a couple votes.  Anyway, whether this is a useful tactic depends on what you see behind the scenes.

It would be interested to see how many voted that didn't participate. I think it was a pretty big number. I visit the gallery pretty regularly but it would be nice if the DAZ forums had a section where are the various contests where cross-posted throughout the year as well as SurveyMonkeys for non-participants to come and vote for the contests. Lots of interesting renders never wind up in the galleries sections. This is the first forum contest outside the Carrara contests that I know of held votes. It is easy to loose track of them all. It would be nice if these contests had by the forum SW the entries gathered and posted in a thumbnail table at the 1st post of the thread, although I don't know if the forum software is capable of automating that task? Maybe if the entry post was tagged with '#entry' tag or something?
