Thanx  If I update, will I need to first uninstall my current versio? If so, will that effect my current category folder?

You don't need to uninstall your current version manually, since the new installer will detect your previous installation and prompt you, letting you know that it will need to uninstall it. If you are asking whether you can keep both your current installation as well as the new version, the answer is no, assuming that they are both general releases. As for your categories, if they are custom categories, my understanding is that you may lose those unless you take precautions beforehand. Sorry, I don't use them myself, but I believe that there is a thread that addresses that somewhere here on the forums, or perhaps someone with experience in preserving custom categories will happen by.

  • Okey dokey, thanx for the comeback. That's pretty much what I suspected about the DS part.  But I'm kinda bummed out re the custom categories. Over the past few years I've lost my category entries a few time and had to rebuild them from scratch.  Seems logocal  that they must be kept in a dedicated directory; that way backing them up, if for no other reason than archival purposes, would be easy peasy.

@Desperado I have a massive custom category set up and it transferred to the newest version just fine (I too have had to do mine over twice now. Took literally, a couple of months of all of my spare time to redo) so I am always wary of upgrading. But I had no issues the last couple of times.  Although its never a bad idea to back it up on an exterior drive or something.  I have mine on an exterior drive it was right around $100 for 4TB.  I have the core program installed to C drive and everything else is on my exterior drive.  My laptop and PC ran out of memory and this was a relatively cheap option. But it also means my content is backed up lol.

To be on the safe side, I suggest you do "Export User Data" from the "Content DB Maintenance" menu (in the options from the Content Library tab little lines icon at the top) before you install the new version. This will save all your self-created metadata in Runtime/Support as a file called something like userdata.dsx (can't remember exctly the name but you can find exactly where it is from the bottom of the log file after the export completes).

Then install the new version of DS and check whether your categories are there.

If not, you should be able to use "Content DB Maintenance" and "Import Metadata" and just select your user data file from there to get your categories back.

  • TA-DAAAAAA!  I just installed the 4.10.0.107 and all content and categories carried over just fine.

    Good news yes

  • I have tried 3 times now to migrate from Daz Studio 4.8.0.59 to 4.10. I have a lot of custom caregories. I have exported user data and then tried to reimport it checking ony user data one time and all the data another time. They don't seem to migrate. t Each time here has been a log stating that the migration in the beginning was un successful. I have spent a lot of time building categories. Am bummed out.

Paula, you shouldn't have to re import the data, that's only if you somehow lose the categories during the upgrade.  Do you still have the 4.8 version or did the 4.10 version install?

  • I still have the 4.8 version because I do backups and put it back. It said migration error or something similar. My library shows all the daz files in it. It's just my categories that won't appear.

You might want to put in a support ticket for that if no one is able to figure it out here.
