I can't see anything in my viewport when I add a light.

Scene looked normal until I added a spotlight. Then all the object in scene became absolute black.
How can I add spotlights to a scene without this happening?

Try Control-L to switch the 'headlight' on. (Pressing Control-L again will switch it off.)
Don't forget to switch it off before rendering.
Preview Lights (ctrl/cmd L) is on by default. Switching it off gives the equivalent of the basic headlamp, but it isn't the headlamp and won't render.
Cool, Thank for your help, folks!
Keep in mind that, assuming any figure in your scene is at or near its default position, adding a light will plonk it down on the floor, between the figure's feet, pointing back into the scene, so it won't actually illuminate anything. You'll need to move the light to wherever you want it, and making sure the Preview Light is on as noted above will help you see what you're doing.
