Lighting Question

What is the easiest product to use (or easiest way) to quickly correct general interior lighting issues?  

It takes me a long time to make the adjustments and correctios, when- for some scenes- I wish to simply reduce the brightness and make the skin appear...less plastic, and more real.

I don't need special lighting for these particular scenes,just a faster (easy as possible) way to make quick adjustments (usually for large or medium-size interior shots).

    3DL or Iray?  Closed room or pseudo interior? What lights are you using?

    Right now, for these scenes, I just need 3d-delight- or whatever will work the easiest, as I'm not going to render these scenes at the moment.

    It is a farely-large closed-room set.

    I've tried playing around with different presets.

    Also with spot, overhead, distant, left-right, intensities.  I either can't get the skin to look good, light the room properly or get a balance that reduces overall brightness (or brightness on objects).

    I need these scenes, but they're eating too much time.

    Wasn't sure what you meant by this, so just in case: At least for 3DL (unsure about new Iray modes), you will have to render to get the desired result.  The viewport prior to rendering is just a very rough approximation of the final rendering, to allow you to arrange things in your scene.  Lights will not properly light the scene, materials may not display for some shaders and will look quite different than designed, you are limited to a few lights dependent on your graphics card capabilities, shadows will be nonexistent/wrong, and the scene can even sometimes go almost completely black.

    I've noticed that, as I've worked more and more with the process.

    I'm still trying to understand the limits of the pre-render stage.

    ...and learn the simplist ways to produce better lighting at that phase- which- admittedly- is limited.

    When I render, I like to know what I have- sometimes, enjoy it  before rendering- since my renders take so long to produce.

    I think I've made a little progress with this one, so that's a start..

    ...but a quick way to improve the room (light) intensity better, would help.

    ...shadows...I'd like to work with that, I've produced a couple, but haven't gotten back to it, yet.
