Any good techniques for muzzle flash on a gun?

I have an idea for a story I'd like to work on and I would like to be able to add muzzle flashes to a few scenes involving a shoot out. Does anyone know any good techniques for creating this effect?

That...would do the trick yes lol. Thanks Leana, I figured it would be more of a trick lighting and shading but yeah, a product simplifies it. I appreciate the point in the right direction.
