[Is there a difference between a material and a shader?] I'm not exactly sure what the difference is, if there is one?

  • A shader is code that tells the renderer how a surface behaves, a material soecifies which shadr to use and its settings.

If you mean presets, a shader presert affects al selected surfaces on selected models, a materials preset affects one or more surfaces with specific names, if present, on selected models with potentially different settings for each name.
