Question about textures: multiple instances

Instances of same texture on same figure or prop in same scene?

Searching has found no answers to my specific question.  If the same texture image is used multiple times in one prop, figure or scene, does DS load a separate copy into RAM for each such instance or just one copy to be applied in all cases that call for that same map?

Example: If I make a simple table with primitives, two for slab legs and a third for the top then apply the exact same surface to each piece, is that surface in memory three times or just one time?

Example:  If I load two G3 charactors and place the exact same cloths on both, are the associated textures loaded only once for all or is a separate instance loaded for each charactor even if same as on other charactor?
