Lighting a close quarters interior scene

I have been working on a scene for three figures using crew stateroom interior. If I use anything other than the camera headlamp, it is dark. I've added distant light, spot light and even a linear point light, but no joy. Anyone have any advice?

If you are rendering in Iray, you will need to crank up the lumens in the tens of thousands.
PLus change any monitors, phones, etc to emitters for extra light (put the image map into the light color slot)
Distant lights shine from outside the scene, regardless of where the avatar is place - you control only the direction - so they won't light an enclosed space.
For Iray Linear point lights are the same as regular, since Iray uses real (inverse square) falloff.
