can you save as transparent background PNG if using hdri lighting?

I'm using iradiance, and I turn off dome and ground but my character still has a white background. Is there a way to get a transparent background using hdri lighting? Getting frustrated..

  • Yes go to your environment tab and turn off the backdrop.

It still shows a white background as its rendering, will this go away once its saved as a png? Or is something still messed up?

You should be getting the transparncy grid. Draw Done is the setting which needs to be off, assuming this is Iray.

I think something's messed up. Dome is off, ground is off and no backdrop in enviornment..yes, it's Iray..I've noticed sometimes if you use a backdrop and change to hdri lighting, things get strange. Maybe I'll try the reset and see if that helps and start over.

In the Environment tab, you need to set the "Type" to None to get a transparent background. It is not sufficient to leave the type as Backdrop and set the backdrop image to None. (That just uses a solid color backdrop instead of an image file backdrop). This has confused me several times.

Click the down arrowhead and select None:

    This is what you want:

    type none.jpg
    480 x 362 - 84K
    Type none selected.JPG
    482 x 368 - 15K

THAT was it, thank you so much..I kept seeing "none" but the upper pull down menu and selecting none is what did it. Thanks so much!!!
