Strange effect when rendering a plane as a mirror in iray

Hi,

I have noticed a strange effect a couple of times now when rendering a plane as a mirror (using nickel shader). Any objects that I have touching the mirror plane are set back in the actual mirror. I have attached a capture to show what I mean. In the screenshot the figure is actually touching the plane, so I would expect the mirror image to be touching the hand, but it's not, it's set back a bit. I also noticed this with shoes on a mirror, the reflection only appears to be touching if I set the object into the plane a bit. It's like a mirror, with REALLY thick glass. I'm not sure what to do to solve this.

Kind regards

Dawn

  • OK, so I added the shader tot he plane again and then set the glossy roughness to 0. Seems a lot better now!

  • Try the Silver shader instead of Nickel. Mirrors used to be made with silver backing, so you might get a better result. And yes, Glossy Roughness on metals is generally non-zero, which doesn't help if you want a good mirror effect.

  • That's a good idea, I will try that. Thank you.

I also moved the figure so she was 'just' overlapping the mirror with her fingernail tips, it's looking much better now :-)

  • Use an iray mirror shader preset. aaron575 has a free one posted at sharecg

I rendered a mirror direct from my runtime and didn't get that. It worked just by getting the figure as close to the mirror as I could.

http://www.sharecg.com/v/81125/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/Iray-Mirror-Shader yeah works a treat. I wouldn't and don't use any of the metal presets for a mirror.

  • Thank you, I will give the preset a try as well :-)
