Possible reasons why OpenGL viewport goes black, crashes app?

I've posted this on Tomshardware as well, hoping to isolate a reason for my plight.

Ive had a previous AMD Computer with an FX 6300 and a GTX 970 GPU. Everything worked smoothly.

Now i have a new build with a Ryzen 5 1600, and a GTX 1060 GPU.

At random intervals, when working on everyday stuff, the 3D viewport goes black and Studio freezes up

of course I've updated all the drivers, and Windows 10, etc

If anyone has ideas what might be causing this, I'd be grateful  -  it's driving me crazy not being able to troubleshoot because I don't know what else to look at.

thanks

I had the same problem, I think. Between OPEN GL errors, and the famoud NVLDDMKM error. Mine only went black for about 5 seconds, then came back. When I went to save the render, Studio crashed. I only got the black screen/ or a blue screen of death while rendering in DAZ STUDIO Iray. This would happen at least once every day I was rendering the same larger scenes.

One thing to try first is to totally remove the old NVIDIA driver before installing the latest version. (It didn't help with me. I even went to NVIDIA and followed several directiuons, with the same results. So I abandoned that idea.) Use DDU, available free online.

Reinstalled STUDIO first - same problems. Tested my graphics card (NVIDIA GTX 980) and was OK - memory and stress test. Monitored my internal heat (card, CPU, system) - everything was within norms.

I am running Windows 10 64 bit, with AMD 8 core FX 8570 CPU, 16 GB memory,, 750 watt 1 year old power supply.

My latest try was to swallow the pill and reinstall a clean version of WIndows 10 to start fresh. I also installed a new version of Studio. I have several drives and was able to find a new home for both.I did this last Wednesday. So far, I have had NO problems whatsoever, and even my fans are quieter. (Now watch - I went and jinxed it.) The biggest pain was for me to reinstall my content as I got screwed up trying to get it back. I was going to reinstall it anyways, so that forced me to do it.  If you think you might have to reinstall DAZ STUDIO, there are threads on this forum to tell you the best way. But REMEMBER TO COPY YOUR DATA DIRECTORY FIRST to a clean location!

    Good luck

    Roy

  • Thanks roy for your detailed write up.

I to did all these things already. The only thing left to try is reinstall Windows (gulp). Not looking forward to that.

but I'm getting a MoBo replacement so might as well at this juncture.

    OK - good luck!

It's aggravating, I know/ I spent a month and a half trying to sort it out, with not much help on line.

I haven't looked at your graphics cards to see if they are compatible, but if they are, you could try swapping your new card out for your old one.  If that fixes the issue, you know it's probably related to either your new card or the drivers for it, which might be a clue.
