Question about iray and gpu memory (yes another one)

Bare with me here. I know that when the GPU runs out of memory the work is shunted to the CPU, however what is the limiting factor for that memory? Is it the geometry only, Texture only or a combination of both? I started a render last night that got booted to the CPU but something went wrong and it crashed. Started again and it stayed on the Gpu geometry was 1.6gb but textures were 35gb. So where is the trigger point for iray to boot to CPU and what caused it to happen the first time but not the second time?

  • The difference may have been that the second tiem was cleaner - DS may have had fewer items (espcially textures) in memory, the GPU may have had less memory occupied or less fragementation of its free memory, and so on.
