What are some things that slow down Iray renders ?

I'm always trying to find the right balance between complexity and render speed when rendering scenes. I was wondering what are some things that slow down Iray renders? For instance, when rendering with 3delight I know that transmapped hair can turn a 2 minute render into a 30 minute render or subsurface shading calculations can bring things to a halt. Because of this, I know that if I want to render a sequence of images pretty quickly, these should be avoided. Are there similar examples for Iray?

Three quick things spring to mind: lack of direct lighting into the scene; highly reflective surfaces that cause many reflections; detailed surfaces.

There are many, many others. Whether you encounter them depends on how you make your scenes. Your best bet is to experiment with simple scenes, and try with the things you render.

Volume effects. They are awesome but sloooow.

SSS. If your figures aren't close to the camera, it's not a bad idea to set translucency to 0 and go Thin Shell On.

Subd. Again, if figures aren't close, consider no more than 1, or base resolution if you can get away with it.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah this sounds like the best strategy. I have alot more trial and error to work on when it comes to Iray.

Thanks william. Yeah tinkering with subd is something I noticed affects render speeds in 3delight and I didn't really think to realize that it would do so with Iray as well. I'm not sure I'm familar with volume effects...can you explain a little bit?

  • detailed surfaces = Hair. Stranded hair specifically.
