Multiple Instances of DAZ Studio Open at Once...

I used to open multiple instances of studio at the same time.  It was great if I was working on multiple characters and a scene.  It really added a lot of efficiency to my workflow.  For about a month now, when I do this, I start getting windows memory errors.  It only seems to happen when DAZ studio is open and doesn't seem to happen with multiple instances of WoW or other video games running at the same time together.  Is this a DAZ error or something else?

Also my file menu in studio is starting to get shuffled around.  Save As, open and other commands are arranging themselves differently on the file menu.  Do I need to wipe the program off my drive and start over?

Thanks!

No...you need to stop opening multiple instances,   They will all use the SAME temp locactions, config settings and what not...and when one screws up, it screws them all up.  So, when you run out of memory (because each instance will use as much memory as it can/needs...they won't share THAT), if UI elements are being impacted/restricted then across the board, the UI will be impacted and since many settings in Studio are 'last used', that will really make things hard the next time you open it.

Uninstalling won't, for the most part, change/restore the default settings!

  • So I probably changed some setting that makes it eat memory and now it remembers that setting.  It worked fine for months and months.  It just recently starting having memory errors. I wonder if I can find the setting I changed and see if that helps.  Thanks for the info!

If you've recently updated to the latest version of Studio, that could be enough to change the way it uses memory.

These errors/problems are the exact reason multiple instances of Studio are not recommended.

  • This started happening before I updated to 4.9.whatever the new V8 version is. It persisted after I updated.

You can if you want, but it won't work. The settings for menus and stuff are part of the user interface Layout system; they're saved in a separate settings file and are not affected when you uninstall/reinstall the DAZ|Studio program.

I'm trying to remember what I did to solve this same problem when I had it last year. Can you still use the Window menu? Go into that, select Workspace, and click on Select Layout. Look at the setting in the dropdown menu at the top of the Select Layout dialog. What you need to do is change the setting to a different layout, then back to the original one. That ought to clear out any corrupted settings and reload the default for your selected layout.

(Note that whenever the question is "Do I need to wipe the program off my drive and start over?", in over 99% of cases the answer is "no". Reinstalling the program will only reinstall the program, it won't affect your layout settings, installed content, content database, or any other program settings which might get corrupted.)
