Hello,

Imported obj don't show up in the viewport, only the axis showing their size although they visibility is turned up.

Still, they render ok

Any help ?

Thanks

If it renders, but doesn't show in the viewport, then it is a materials problem...probably opacity is at 0% (if using the base 3DL shader, which is what is usually loaded on an imported obj).

  • Excuse my ignorance but where do I set up Opacity ? I only found "Cutout opacity" in the surface tab and it's set to 1.

Go through all the import steps...and which renderer are you using (sounds like Iray).

Also does the obj have a defined material BEFORE you import it?

Yes I do render with IRay and my obj are textured from previous scenes that I open. I suppose that in the meantime I inadvertently changed a setup...

No, sometimes the settings from the other materials are not correctly set for Iray.  Opacity/Transparency being one of the more common ones that is wrong.  Applying an actual Iray material (at least the Iray Uber shader) should fix it.

  • I did that fine, saved my scenes but today when I open them, the obj are not visible anylonger.

I'm guessing that the original materials are being used, again, instead of the applied Iray.  I've found that saving a scene without making sure the items in it are in 'native format' (Studio files) tends to be unreliable as far as 'fine tuning' goes.  It tends to go back to the original instead of using the 'tweaked' version.

I suspect, if  the item is hidden in scene tab.but it stilll set as visible in redner then you can render it.

select obj, then check parameter tab. >display

about recent daz studio,  we often need to check, "visible" for scene view, and "visible"  for render too. it happen even though you set iray view for drawing mode.

though I do not know, scene tab auto change those setting or not,

if we do not save as dsf.  (you can save import obj  as prop from top menu file>save as> support assets >figure and prop. then it show more reliablity about saved scene.

  • Something weird is happening : when I apply iray shaders to my object surfaces they still don't show up : I have to render for them to appear. Funny, eh ?

I have not experienced it still,  if you actually set visible on ,in parameer tab>display , visible ON,  but yo not show it in 3d view.  but you can render it?

pic (SS) your parameter tab>dsiplay, and scene tab,  3d view may help.without it I can only suspect,,(eg you use 3d view as perspective view, , but camera which render s different, etc) .   I believe it should be simple problem and I know it usually really annoying untill we can find what cause it.

Can you post an example and a screenshot of the Surfaces?

  • Sure

On the 1st, the axis show the onject is present altough not visible.

On the 2nd, the render makes it appear.

Thanks to you all for your help !

If you could, post a screen shot of one of the surfaces...Body would be a good one....All the parts of that surface.

Need  not show another ss,  you use wire bounding box view, to draw geometry.  it is reason. change draw mode to something.

Everything looks 'normal' in the surfaces...so that's odd.  But check each surface, paying attention to Cutout Opacity, making sure it doesn't have any image maps (unless the surface specifically needs one).

I say  again, you use wire drawing mode.  it is not matter about surface things. just about draw mode for 3d view.

  • Thanks Miss Kita, problem solved ! As i thought I probably changed the setting inadvertantly.

Thank you to you all for your time and patience.
