I'm rendering in Iray from 4.9 and it seems any lights placed below the ground plant lighting the belly of a aircraft don't show in the render. Does Iray think there's a solid ground there when there isn't anything in the scene?
Yes Iray considers that is always a ground plane even when it is set to off (which is just a visibility switch and should be renamed). Generally if you could not do it in the real world you cannot do it in Iray
Use Infinite/Finite but not the 'with ground' and turn Draw Ground to off. It wont work if there is a ground plane with any geometry between the camera/light and the sky.

Short answer...yes.
You'll need to turn the 'ground' off...I believe it is in the Render Settings tab.
It seems to happen even when ground is turned off...ie not rendered in iray.

Thanks Fishtales, that did the trick.
