Lighting Question

Can someone learnded me??
So, I load an Iray product, the included Render Settings are a bit dark, the subject needs a tad bit ilumination, so I create a new Spotlight. I change the Lunims to 50,000, make it an eliptical or rectangle, and voilà!, I can play with this light all day long moving and adjusting it to no avail.
I delete the stupid thing, and create a new Spot. This time I click on Options 1st and select the Show Through Camera, or whatever the verbiage is, and it works fine. So what have I learned here? If the only way to get the Spot to show up is by using the Option, why isn't that just the default??
Thanks

The second option in the Create New Light dialogue (after apply defaults) is to copy the Active Viewport Transforms, followed by the camera or view name. This places the light at the camera position, pointing as th camera points, which means it will be placed to illuminate whatever you are looking at. If you create a defaultspot light it will be placed at the origin, shining towards the back of the scene - if you don't see the light in the renders it may well be blocked by other items, or shining on things you can't see from the current view.
