Total ancient newb question

I've been using Daz for several years but only on a very basic level for my own personal hobby stuff. Set up characters render, take into photoshop/painter etc. Much like one of my buds and former colleague Shuler (a featured artist on the home page).

Our new media department has been getting into creating 3D VR training projects and was trying to find ways to leverage the cool Daz figures into this process. Trying to expand my basic graphic designer capabilities a bit into a more supportive role in the field.

I'm not really good in this cross-program area and was hoping someone could point me to areas to assist with what you might think is a simple aspect, and the searches I've found are not really working.

I'm not really looking for a high working polly count, just ways to bring over figures with bones and movement, some basic clothing etc. All of my pretests using Blender (don't have an active Max subscription to test in the end program).

But all of my imports are just broken surfaces if i move them individually. Such as trying to bend the arm just pulls off Mike's bicept etc.

Any thoughts or hints on where to look for a 3D for dummies would be awesome. Thanks!

PS. Or if you're looking for work...

Jason

For a more definitive answer, citadelli, you should be a little more specific. You are attempting to use DAZ figures in Blender, is that correct? And eventually you want to use them in 3DS Max? And you want to be able to use these figures to create animations in those applications? Also, and this is important, which figures are you wishing to use? Genesis 8? Genesis 3? Genesis 2? Other?

Although I'm not an expert in cross-program use of DAZ figures, right off I can tell you that issues, particularly owing to the ways different 3D applications treat surfaces/materials and rigging (movement) are bound to exist. As I say, if you can be a bit more specific, others more knowledgeable about compatibility and animation could happen by and offer some advice and assistance.

  • Thx for the feedback SixDs,

Overall I think you hit the nail on the head, ultimately trying to take the figures from Daz into 3DS Max. Or after talking to our full-stack developer maybe just skipping 3DS and putting them in Unity3D?

As for which figures, anything from V4/M4 to Genesis 8, which ever folks seem to think works best.

Use would possibly be as an Avatar for a VR training program, then maybe scripted animations (person walking down the hall etc).

    Thanks again!

Actually, if you are ultimately looking at using the figures in a game engine, there are a variety of tutorials around regarding this, and a search using "DAZ unity" will capture a bunch. You might want to investigate the figures that DAZ offers through its sister site, Morph3D , that offer lower res, game-ready assets as an alternative:

May be iClone is what you're looking for, it has good support for DAZ figures

As for importing figures into Max or Blender, a simple option is to export FBX from DAZ Studio
