Hello :D How can I convert between items made for different characters?

edited December 1969 in New Users

Hello, I just downloaded Daz to make characters for my stories and for a visual novel (perhaps, perhaps, I always leave unfinished projects, but, anyway...)

So I am currently downloading a lot of free stuff and having a lot of fun with that. But some items don't work very well. How can I learn how to deal with those?

For example, sometimes I get clothes that I can't fit on my character, and sometimes they fit but on some poses the clothes look odd - how can I adjust the clothes in those cases?

How can I work with dynamic clothing? I downloaded the free ones from Optitex, but most won't fit my chars. Yes, I used the dynamic clothing tab, and using 'drape' helps A LOT, but some clothes just won't change. Again, with those there are times when the clothes ALMOST fits, but not in all points - how can I make a finer adjustment?

I see many characters and things for Victoria 4 - can I use those? How can I convert those to Genesis?

Also, I am currently using free items, but this march sales is very interesting... anyone can recommend the best deals to create a huge variety of characters for a visual novel? :D

And, last, a curiosity: what do you guys use Daz for? Just for fun? What projects do you make with that program?

Thanks, hopefully I made some sense... xD

Autofit is a plugin that comes with DAZ Studio, and it can convert V4 and M4 clothing to fit Genesis and it's morphs.

What clothing exactly are you having problems with?

Clothing that is designed for Genesis (or V4) will have a Fit To option, so that you can repose the character and the clothing will follow, This is known as conforming clothing, but Dynamic clothing does not do this, you have to redrape again after a repose.

The Optitex clothing is made for V4 or M4, and cannot be scaled to fit other different sized characters, although it can be used with the base Genesis figure You could scale the characters up or down, but then you may need to scale everything else as well.

First off, Welcome to DAZ! :)

Second, I can try to answer some of your questions...

Clothes are made for certain 'generations' of figures - Genesis is Generation 5, Michael 4 and Victoria 4 are among the various Gen 4 figures, and so on. Using clothes designed for one generation with another is difficult. Older clothes (Gen 3 and Gen 4) can be used with Genesis, provided you have the appropriate morphs for Genesis (which can be purchased in the store and make Genesis into the various Gen 4 and Gen 3 shapes). The AutoFit tool also helps clothes fit the Genesis figure. A search of the store will be most helpful here.

Genesis is tremendously versatile, depending on what morphs you have installed. I have several packs that allow me to alter the ethnicity, body shapes, and even turn Genesis into various animals, creatures and aliens. The only earlier generation figure I use is Victoria 4.2, because there is such an abundance of free material for her (and she was on sale at the time). What other products you purchase depends on what you want to do with your visual novel, and there are many high-quality products available here and elsewhere, in an abundance of genres and price ranges.

What do I use DAZ for? Right now, this:

I'm also trying my hand at more complex standalone images, but my hardware is limiting that right now.

I hope this is some help to you, and best of luck with your creations. :)

OK, lots of questions get you lots of answers.
There two types of clothing models, conforming & dynamic.

Conforming cloth only fits the figure it was made for, unless you convert it using crossdresser.
The cloth should have adjustment dials to make it fit better, if not you must use magnets/deformers to fix the poke thru.

Dynamic cloth is draped on the model by Studio/Poser.
Studio 4.X has an auto fit tool that will fit most V4/M4/A4/K4 clothing to the genesis figure .

You will find a lot of free clothing for V4/A4.

Beyond that, check the newbie threads for tutorials to answer all the rest of your questions.

    Welcome to the madhouse!

Nice, creating comic looks like a fun project :D hope to read more soon :)

Thanks for the very quick reply, guys. I am beginning to understand things betters, I guess.

One of the clothes I just can't fit on my character is the sweater on this page: http://www.optitex-dynamiccloth.com/FreebieDownload04.php

Such a shame, there are so many pretty clothes there =/ But I use that sweater and it just ignores my character, I can't drape it, the fit option doesn't appear, I tried changed the parent of the sweater, and nothing. I don't know what I am doing wrong =/

For the other clothes, the non-dynamic ones, I can usually fit them, and I will look into the tutorials on how to rig them, thanks.

Dynamic clothes can be tricky. The idea is to manually position the item around your figure (use the default T-pose for this). Once it's done, move a few frames along (5 or so) and then apply a pose to the figure. The outfit won't automatically conform, but that's fine, just okay it. Then return to frame 1 and run the drape with the animated box checked.

This will apply a drape over your figure, and follows the movements of your character to get into the desired pose. When rendering, render from the frame of the desired pose, whether animated or still.

man, thanks for your explanation  !!!

I'd just believe that all my work with victoria 4 was lost if I want to use the dynamic clothes on genesis, but, thanks to you, I made this:
