Iray images (of a V4) slightly out of focus, and...

1)I am rendering in Iray with an HDRI light dome/scene. A V4 figure comes out slightly out of focus. I do not have depth of field turned on. Happens with other figures too, but the V4 seemed a little worse.

2)When I use most of my HDRI dome light/scene rigs I can't 'see' the features in the dome when I complse, only after rendering. Say, for example, I set a Gen 3 figure in a dome scene. All I can see is the Gen 3, until it is rendered. I use texture shaded to compose. I tried 'NVidea I Ray' but that only made the Gen 3 go grey, the details of the dome did not show up. I have Render Settings>Environment>Dome>Draw Dome unchecked or checked, same result either way.

Ideas wold be appreciated. Please, keep the response non-techy, I have no idea in many of these forums what people are talking about. I am a longtime DAZ user, but 'I just drive it, I never look under the hood'-LOL. wink

Thanks in advance.

RE: can't see dome: When you select the Iray preview mode, it takes some time before the preview is visible. If your Gen 3 turned gray, that is a sign that the process has started. Wait and be patient. The length of time it takes depends on the content of your scene, the size of the viewport, and the specs of your computer. If you have a high end NVIDIA graphics card, your wait will be less. If you render with CPU, the wait will be longer. Give it a minute and see what happens. Be sure you have Draw Dome checked.

RE: out of focus: You can increase the sharpness of your scene by changing the Render Settings pixel filter from Gaussian 1.5 to something like Mitchell 1.0. Experiment. Going too low will cause jaggies.

This didn't work. I don't have a Nvidia graphics card. Today for example, I am rendering a scene in Iray with an HDRI background from "Iradience". I can not see the background at all until a few minutes into the render as the render resolves. This makes it difficult to pose charecters and objects in the scene.

I don't have a Nvidia graphics card either but use HDRI backdrops a lot. Open the AUX Viewport and dock it to the left of the Main Viewport. Set it to Iray and leave the main Viewport to Texture Shaded. Add the HDRI to the Environment Map and let the Aux Viewport render. Now hide it and load some products. Open it and wait for it to render again. Depending on the product loaded you can move it and still see where it is going in relation to the HDRI. It might be that the product is too memory/processor intensive to do that so hide the Aux Viewport, move the product within your scene by imagening the HDRI and then open the Aux Viewport to see the result. It sounds a lot of trial and error and labour intensive but once done a few times it get s easier :)

This isn't working for me. The HDRI invironment/light dome rigs, such as "i-radience" just don't show. I am shooting into the dark. I do get good results, but I often have to reposition the dome and/or figures and start over.

I am new to HDRI light/environment set ups, but I really love them. It is near photo-realism and so easy when it works.

    Ideas?

Skydomes don't work in Iray without a bit of work. Go to the scene tab and hide the Skydome then go to the Environment Map and load the Skydome image into there. The .jpg image will work but HDRI's are better for lighting.
