Off-screen objects and render time

I've been wondering, if an object in a scene that's not visible in the render, say, directly behind the camera. Will that object still affect the render time? Should I delete all objects that are not currently visible?
If those objects do affect the render time, is hiding them with the "visible" option just as good as deleting them alltogether or is there even the slightest difference?
I'm using Iray btw, Thanks

Certainly in Iray they will affect rendertime - they might, for example, be reflected in somethign that is in shot so they have to be loaded and evaluated. 3Delight might not need them, as it isn't always using real reflections, but they willprobably have at least a slight impact. Setting invisible should be nearly as good as deleting - hidden they will be using a bit of memory in DS, but will not be sent to the renderer.
Interesting, thanks for the answer. So in a sense if I'm doing some insane scene that my GPU can't handle and it goes over to my CPU instead, having an entire circus behind the camera might not be ideal. Thanks man
Depending on your scene setup, an Iray Section Plane may be more "time efficient" for set up.
