Slightly changing skin color of model - better to change diffuse overlay weight or base color?

For those times when you don't want to redo the skin textures but just add a slight hint of brown/yellow/white - is it better to change the base color or the diffuse overlay color (and diffuse overlay weight) in the surfaces editor? Or should you be do something else entirely? And what's the difference betweent the two?

Diffuse Overlay does just as it name implies, it overlay an image or color over the diffuse texture obscuring it based on the weight setting. Adding color through the Diffuse color slot has more of a blending effect but dark and/or saturated colors can overwhelm fine details in the textures
