One is needed for the other to work. Smart content allows you to select products from a single location and PostgreSQL is what makes it so that stuff shows.
PostgreSQL CMS is used for a lot more than just Smart Content -- Categories and Products in the Content Library, custom categories and product tags, labels on icons showing what the file is for (material, shape, light, camera, etc.), etc.
So with PostgreSQL, I can duplicate what Smart Content does and more. I can also have it NOT be connected to my account and work totally offline, correct?
Yes, you don't need to login unless you want to use Daz Connect, Smart Content and the other functionality made possible by the CMS will work even if you never log in.
How easy or difficult would you say is it to migrate content (point to regular "My Library" content) with PostgreSQL?
You mean turn them into Categories, or into Smart Content? Categories are easy -- you can either "Scan Known Directories for Content" and then categorize them from the Default > Scan Results category (that just givex you stuff that isn't already categorized), or you can select any folder in Content Library > Daz Studio Formats or Content Library > Poser Formats, right-click on the folder and choose "Create Category > From folder and subfolders to turn the entire folder tree into categories. Making them Smart takes a little more effort, as you need to tell the CMS what each item is compatible with -- it's not hard, but can't be done for everything at once,
I've install PostgreSQL. I don't see where anything visually has changed. Where do I go to begin "scan" or update anything?
There are severaL things you can do:
1) if you just want to make a custom category tree from some existing folders in Daz Studio Formats or Poser Formats, right-click on a folder and choose "Create Category > from folder and subfolders"
2) since you have an empty database right now, you can go to the options menu (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner of the pane) for the Content Library or Smart Content pane, and choose "Scan Known Directories For Content" and that will put everything in Default > Scan Results, still using the folder structure on disk, which you can then catgegorize into a structure that works for you
3) to get the Smart Content information for products that come with it,:from the options enu choose "Content DB Maintenance > Re-Import Metadata"
Now that PostrgreSQL is installed, when you install a product with DIM it will add the files it installs to the database. If the product came with metadata it will be categorized and Smart; otherwise it will just be added to Content Library > Products under the name of the product.
Can I create my own gui for particular database items (for the PostgreSQL db)?
Thanks (for before)!
