Whats a template?!

So I am a noob that doesn't really know what he is doing, but I am still trying stuff. I am already able to create morphs and I also modify texture maps on my drawing software ; these kind of stuff. Still, I am not very knowledgable on Daz3D and these kind of softwares. 

Having that said, what use can I have of templates that often comes with products? I am wondering what am I missing on that.

    A template is a guide to show how the geometry of the model is laid out on a texture map - so you can use it to help with painting new textures.

    OO I see, so I could, while modifying the texture, having the template in another layer to help visualising the lay out.
