Can I just save characters as PNG image or do I need to render them?

Hi, I am relatively new to Daz so this is going to be newbie question. I am using daz to create character images for an app, the final product that I need from Daz are png images of characters on a transparent background, and Ill add them to various backgrounds in Photoshop. I have created my charactes and set up lights and they look exactly as I want onscreen, is there any need render them now or it is possible to just save them as Png with transparent background? If so how do I do save as Pgn? And Is there some benefit to rendering that I am missing?
Thanks

You have to render.
If you render just the character, it will be a png with transparent background.
It will have a greyscale checkerboard pattern in the render window and will save with an alpha channel when saved as PNG or TIFF.
